The 1870 census for Decatur County, Indiana shows Daniel and John T.
Capper families living next door to each other. The John T. Capper
family shows a wife named Mary in the 1870 census, so wonder if the 1880
census transcription was an error for John T. Capper's wife's name?
This is what the 1870 census shows:
1870 census Decatur County, Indiana
Sand Creek Township page 171
Daniel Capper, age 54, farmer, Indiana
Eliza , age 55, Ohio
Daniel, age 20, Indiana
Eliza A., age 20, Indiana (probably wife of Daniel who is age 20)
Orville, age 1, Indiana
next door is:
John T. Capper, age 26, farmer, Indiana
Mary A., age 28, Indiana
Eliza J., age 5, Indiana
Ida M., age 4, Indiana
Mary A., age 1, Indiana
Margaret Elliot, age 11, Indiana (residing with them)
a few households away is the Martin Capper who is probably a brother to
the elder Daniel Capper, and his son William Capper and his son Daniel
Capper families.
So John T. Capper must have moved to Kansas sometime between 1871 and
1879 since he was there in 1880 census.
If you are able to find out where in Virginia this Capper came from
prior to going to Indiana, please let me know.
The Martin Capper family was in Union and Decatur County, Indiana as
early as 1830 and 1840 along with a Thomas Capper and Daniel Capper,
probably all from same Capper family.
