Hi Listers,
Regarding the email of Wed, 3 May 2006, I have since been informed of a couple of
corrections that need to be addressed. Since we cannot go into the email and correct it,
the only thing I can do is add a new email with corrections. I will display a copy of
that email with the corrections made. Hopefully this will straighten out any
misunderstandings.

You will notice that the family came to Canada (in 1905). Sadly, their
first child was left behind in a graveyard in Birmingham.
George Henry Capnerhurst sailed on the SS Victorian, leaving Liverpool on
April 27, 1905 and arriving (I believe in Quebec) May 7, 1905. There is
some doubt as to whether or not Gladys was dead when George left England, or
if it happened when he was already gone. I was told that Gladys was 17
months old when she died. That would put her date of death around May,
1905. I have to send for her death certificate to verify this. I do know
for sure she died in 1905.
Ellen SMITH (we always refer to women under their maiden names in genealogy
-- even though they were legally married -- if you saw the number of girls
named after their mothers, you would understand why) sailed on the SS
Bavarian, leaving Liverpool on June 1, 1905 and arriving (also, I believe,
in Quebec) June 10, 1905 (at 3:30 am). They both proceeded to Toronto,
Ontario after docking.
[Just a little note of interest -- along with Ellen on board the SS
Bavarian, we find George's sister, Kate and
their maternal cousin, Lillian Maude LLOYD, presumably daughter of Sarah
Jane CARRINGTON who married John LLOYD. They were known to the family as Jack and
Jenny.]
As you can see from the births, George and Ellen began their sojourn in
Canada living in Toronto. George had a job there working in the Overland
Motor Company. However, when a strike effectively shut that factory down,
they moved to Muskoka, Ontario, with (from what I was told) the idea of
farming in mind. I am also told that Muskoka is not the easiest place to
farm and they moved out to Saskatchewan to homestead around D'Arcy. For no apparent
reason that I have been able to discover, the family pulled up stakes and moved to the
homestead in Fiske, Saskatchewan, (which, I am told, is
back in the family now). From there they moved to Mission, BC where they
lived out the remainder of their lives. After Ellen passed away in Mar of
1947, George remarried a widow named Fanny Wilson, who I am told was from
the Birmingham area as well. After Fanny died in 1967 or thereabouts,
George married for a third and last time to a woman named Edith who survived
him.
Any questions, corrections, or additions to this information? Anyone have
any memories of George and/or Ellen? Please feel free to post whatever you
wish.
Take care, everyone.
Faith Capnerhurst
