Hi All,
Today I thought I would post the information that I have regarding George
Henry's siblings.
Of course the second child born was Frank Alexander who passed away at the
approximate age of 3 in 1885.
Next was Kate Maria.
Around 1907, Kate married Herbert JONES. He was also born in England,
however, the couple were married in Canada. I have not yet been able to
find these records. I did, however, find them in the 1920 and 1930 US
Censuses. They were living in Seattle, Washington. Herbert was a sorter
and marker in a laundry. They had 5 children in the 1920 census but by 1930
three of them were no longer at home. Since I don't know if any of these
children are still alive, I have not included the particulars. I am aware
that Herbert Jones died sometime after the 1930 census was taken. I am not
sure when. However, I know that Kate remarried a man named Henry VOSS. He
had a disabled son named Joe who was with them to the time of their death as
I understand it. I also have a letter that says that one of Kate's
granddaughters (Beatrice's daughter, surname MERRITT) was a bush pilot in
Alaska. Other than the ship's records that I posted last time, I have
nothing else on Kate. Anyone else have anything?
Then, Florence.
She married Charles Hugh DEVEREAUX on November 15, 1909 in Winnipeg,
Manitoba.
They adopted one child, Doris Evelyn, who was born in Toronto, October 24,
1914. She passed away a few years back. We had been corresponding. She
was rather bitter about her childhood and felt that Florence had not treated
her right. Of course, we have no way of knowing what went on, but Doris
says she used to throw it up in her face that she was adopted. I really
didn't get any other information as Doris did not want to talk about her
childhood.
Now we come to Frank Arthur.
Of all the siblings of this family, Frank fared the best. He was taken to
Canada from the workhouse and was placed in a home which, from what I have
been told, gave him every advantage. The people were well off and, more
importantly, loving. Frank said that it was the best thing that could have
happened to him. (Oh, if only all the children could have said the same
thing.) He sailed on the SS Asyrian departing from Liverpool on July 3, 1897
and arriving in Halifax July 15, 1897. He was 8 years old at the time.
When he boarded the boat, the people in charge labelled him with a tag
stating his last name was CAPENHURST. That is the family name used by this
branch to this day.
For a time, he lived in Toronto. But the family eventually moved to
Buffalo, New York. I have been in touch with his sons and daughter and find
them to be lovely people.
Frank married Wilma Frances CARROLL (b. Apr 26, 1893 in Kingston, Ontario)
on Nov 11, 1921. They had 3 children, which I know to be living and
therefore will not post the details. Frank died on Nov 21, 1973. His wife
had died 14 months previously on Aug 8, 1972.
Millie was next.
As most of you know, we have received information from the Barnardo home
regarding Milllie. However, I am not allowed to publish it, and as I
understand it, that means I can't post it to a site on the web. I may make
copies of the material for family however. Suffice it to say that Millie was
sent to Canada at age 11. She traveled on the SS Colonian leaving Liverpool
on Sept 25, 1902 and arriving Oct 6, 1902. This information I found in the
Canadian archives. Around 1905, she went to live with Frank. She met and
married Reginal Redcliffe CLAYTON in Nov of 1917 in Harris, Saskatchewan
where she lived for the rest of her life. They had 5 children - 1 girl and
4 boys which included a set of twins. To the best of my knowledge only the
girl is still living. They are a lovely family.
I think at this point, I had better close as this is getting rather long. I
wil post information regarding Archie and Marie later on.
Take care everyone.
