I am seeking information on family of my gr.gr.grandfather, Sosthene Capers. His father
was apparently M.V. Capers (Munluis Voslo?), born about 1818 in LA, possibly the son of
James C. Capers born abt 1789 in SC.
Abt 1842, in East Baton Rouge Parish, LA, MV Capers married Jane Sides (b. abt 1823 in
EBR), daughter of Jacob Sides and Elnora Barrow.
Supposedly, Sosthene was orphaned, but it appears his parents actually split up. It's
still not clear, but MV seems to have removed himself to Texas, without Jane, and seems to
have been living in Dallas Co. when he passed, possibly remarried. I do not have dates.
Sosthene served as a musician (drummer?) in the Confederate Army during the War of the
States.
On Oct 1, 1868, in EBR Parish, Sosthene married Abi M. Yelvington (born 1851 in EBP Pr.),
daughter of Ellis Yelvington and Elvira Cooper.
Their daughter, Lela Capers was born Feb 15, 1874 (she is one of my paternal
great-grandmothers). Lela apparently had three brothers, Julian, Stuart and Ellis. Julian
also lived in Texas; he was married to Vallie Davenport.
Sosthene died in 1879.
Lela first married Samuel Jasper Fairchild; he was killed within a year, and their
daughter, Sammi, died at age 6, I believe of TB. Lela then married Conrad Connella, and
had three sons. They all eventually moved to California. She died there in 1946.
If any of that fits anybody else's info, I'd love to hear about it!
