Thank you George.
This is the info I have from papers filed by his daughter for his pension.
He was enlisted as James Capen, age 21, Dec 30, 1864 at Goshen NY as
private, Co A 6th NY Cav. He transferred to Co A 2nd NY Provisional Cav
June 17 1865 and mustered out with his company Aug 9 1865 at Louisville KY.
He was born in England and his occupation is listed as sailor.
From this information I am guessing his year of birth to be 1843. He
married after getting out of the Cav (again I am guessing this took place in
NJ since that is where his wife was born, his daughter was born and his wife
and daughter were still living there when his daughter married) ... and they
were in Cumberland County.
So any direction that I can be pointed in is wonderful ... I will be looking
in VT to see what I can find ...

The only James H Capen that I can find in Civil War records first enlisted
in Townshend, VT in the infantry on 9-20-1862. It was not uncommon to
reenlist for a second term in a different unit and it was also not uncommon
for men living in Vermont to serve in the NY Cav. My own GGGG was from VT
and served in two units, The 4th NY Cav and the 9th NY Cav. There was also
a strong family link between the VT/NY Capens and NJ. Several of them moved
to central NJ, Cumberland and Landis Counties after the War ended (mine
included). You may want to expand your search into VT. There were many
James Capens from these families during this period. Cheers, George

I am looking for James H Capen, born abt 1843 in England, married Abigail
Creamer 11 July 1867 (I believe in NJ) and died 11 Dec 1868 at sea on his
way to
England. He enlisted in 1864 as a private in the NY cavalry and mustered
out in
1865. I know he had one daughter, Mary Elizabeth born 1 Sep 1868 in
NJ. I
don't know why he was on a ship heading back to England and his wife and
daughter remained in the US. That is the only information I have on him
... one
of my brick walls.
Any help I can get will be greatly appreciated.
