Message Board Post:
Thank you for your exciting posting - the information adds to what I've found since
the original 'Lucas Line' posting I made.
Here is some added information you may or may not have:
Prudence Brown, b.30 Dec 1801, Preston Twp., New London Co., CT, dau of Pardon Brown (b. 6
Mar 1768 Stonington, New London Co., CT; d. bef 1 Jun 1850) m. 7 Aug 1791 in Preston Twp.,
New London Co., CT, Dorothea Culver (b.15 Nov 1770 in Preston Twp., New London Co., CT, d.
aft 1 Jun 1850 prob in Frankfort, Herkimer Co., NY). Based on census information, I had
tentatively identified Prudence as prob dying in Rock Co., WI aft the 1870 census but
before 1880, so an 1871 date of death in Bridgewater NY makes sense since she had once
lived there.
My identification of Prudence Brown was done using a systematic search of all
ancestry.com
and LDS records for the first name 'Prudence' born in Connecticut circa 1800 +/-
several years. Some dozen possible Prudences were identified, but when all except Prudence
Brown could be excluded (they were married to someone else, the family remained in CT,
they d. unm. etc), she was tentatively identified as Lemuel's wife. That tentative
identification was essentially confirmed by the discovery of a Dorothea Kinney age 79 and
prob her son Sanford Brown age 52 living next door to the Lemuel Capen household (spelled
'Capins') in the 1850 census for Bridgewater, Oneida Co., NY. Dorothea and
Sanford's ages are exactly the same as calculated from birth records for
Prudence's brother Sanford and her mother Dorothy Culver - for the names and ages of a
next door neighbor to match so perfectly cannot happen by coincidence. Prudence's
father must have died earlier, after which her mother remar!
ried a Mr. Kinney, but who also died leaving Dorothea widowed a second time by 1850.
Other genealogies and sources have been found to trace Prudence's father Pardon Brown
back to immigrant Nicholas Browne (b. abt 1601, Inkbarrow Parish, Worcestershire, England,
d. 5 Apr 1673 in Reading, Essex Co., MA), and her mother Dorothea Culver/Colver back to
immigrant Edward Colver, b. abt 1630 prob in Middlesex, England, d. abt 1685 in Groton,
New London Co., CT.
Most census data indicates Lemuel was born late 1799 or early 1800, so the 4 Feb 1800
birthdate in your posting is fully consistent with this. Do you have a source for the date
and anything more about his parents - it is exciting to find this new information (which
is for my wife's line not mine).
Using census records, I believe that Lemuel and Prudence can be traced to Bradford,
Harmony and Janesville, Rock Co., WI in the 1860, 1870 and prob 1880 (Lemuel only)
censuses. Census records indicate their children included Eunice b.ca 1836, James b.ca
1838, Albert b.ca 1840, Esther b. ca 1844. There is a posting of an 1870 Wisconsin
marriage of Albert Waufle to Esther 'dau of Lemuel and Prudence Capen' which is
consistent with the census data identifying Esther as a dau. Other children identified are
- (as you indicate) Lydia Capen who m. Reed Otis Brockway, prob Mary Ann Capen b.20 Jan
1823 in CT, m. John C. Brockway who d.12 Mar 1860 in Beloit, Rock Co., WI (the date of his
death suggests Lemuel and Prudence prob moved to Rock Co., shortly after John C. died).
Possibly an Augusta Capen b. cir 1825, who m. a Mr. Ervin and lived in Janesville 1880
census with 'father-in-law Lemuel 'Cassens'.
The census data for 1900 (the only census that shows a month of birth) has slightly
different birthdates for Lydia (Aug 1826) and Reed (Feb 1825) than in your posting - their
household is listed in Frankfort, Herkimer Co., NY that year.
I can provide more about Prudence Brown's ancestry - including sources - if you need
them.
Can you indicate your sources for Lemuel's birthdate, for Prudence's death and for
their marriage? Do you have anything more about the parents of Lemuel or their other
children?
