Looking to connect with other researchers working with the CAPIN families of Western New
York (mostly Wyoming and Allegany Counties), with branches that went into Ohio, Indiana,
and as far west as Washington State. Mostly I am searching for information about family
and descendents of William W. Capin, b. 1820 in Lyme, Grafton, Connecticut and d. 1904 in
Gainesville, Wyoming, New York.
It looks like this particular branch used the CAPIN spelling almost exclusively, although
the Ohio branch, mostly from William W.'s son Almon, may have used the -en spelling as
well.
Only thing surmised about William W.'s parentage is that his parents may have been
named Ebenezer Capin and Sarah (from his obituary) but that is all I know at this point.
Between 1923 and 1942, the Capins met regularly for family reunions near Gainesville,
Wyoming, New York. According to newpspaper accounts, in the late 1930s, Frances DAMON,
wife of Howard Damon, a William W. descendent, put together a "family book" for
the reunion that not only had up to date (for the time) information on known family, but
also traced the ancestry back to 1636. I'm not counting on that being a totally
accurate document, but if it still exists anywhere I'd love to take a look at it. Its
last known location was in Rochester, NY, where I live now, and I plan to scour the local
genealogical collections to see if it possibly ended up there.
I am a descendent through William's daughter Hattie Elizabeth (Capin) Curtis, who is
my second-great-grandmother. I am double cousin to any descendents of sister Julia (Capin)
Curtis, as Hattie and Julia's husbands Anson and Elon were brothers.
