Andrew Canty was my great grand father's name. I believe his wife's name was
Cornelia, (not sure of the spelling) or Cornelious. My Grandfather's name is Sam
Canty. He came from Alabama. I'm not sure if he was born there. He married a Lila
McClain. They had these children, George Canty, (not Lila's son) - Bobbie Canty,
Cornelious Canty, Dorothy Canty, Jimmy Canty, Sam Canty Jr. Andrew Canty. Grandpa Sam
married a second time to Miss. Zoni. I'm not sure what her last name was. They had
these children: Jackie Canty, Patricia Canty, and Alex Truman Canty. I believe These
Canty's descendants originated from Ireland. (Canty means lively).
(Canty Immigrants) In 1851 to the US. Some of them went to South Carolina. By 1920 Some
of them had moved to Louisiana about 1% of them. I believe these were Andrew Canty's
descendants too, or Slave family name. Our families I believe begin as slaves. However,
Sam Canty, My grandfather had a white side of the family and a black side. I was told
this by my mother Cornelious. This may mean someone from the slave owner side and the
slave side had a child or children. From there they went to Alabama. That's about
all I can tell you. There are two different spelling of "Canty"
"Cantey" that show up in the records. It may or may not be the same Cantys.
Some where in the records could have been a mis-spelling? Do any of these names sound
familiar...?
These are some Cantys that may be in my Canty family line. Parents might have been
separated before the others left for Alabama they are Willie Canty born Oct. 1881 in
S.C., He was listed in the 1910 census at age 19 as Uncle Willie Canty. That’s all I
have. I don’t want to confuse the situation. I hope I have helped in some way. If you
believe I am part of your family’s line then please email me as soon as possible. I am
putting together a family website and creating a family news letter.
