Hello-
I am fairly new to genealogy, and brand new to mailing lists, so please be
patient with me!
I have recently begun researching the Canty family. I have an 1880 census
extract from Cabell County, West Virginia that has Margaret Elizabeth Canty
as a daughter in the household of John and Mary Canty. The entire content
of the household listing is as follows:
H008 Canty John WM 36 Laborer
IR IR IR
Mary WF 33 Wife
Keeping House IR IR IR
Michael WM 7 Son At Home
WV IR IR
Margaret WF 5 Daughter At Home
WV IR IR
Mary WF 3 Daughter At Home
WV IR IR
Ellen WF 6/12 Daughter At Home
WV IR IR
Margaret is the lineal ancestor, and I have the birth certificate for one of
her children that indicates that Margaret's middle name was Elizabeth. That
same document says that her birthplace was Pomeroy, Ohio, but a mailed
request returned no Cantys. The certificate was a delayed filing, after
Margaret's death. The oldest of Margaret's children that I have identified
is John A. Smoot, born in Toledo Ohio. Margaret's tombstone, in Charleston,
WV shows that she lived from 1874 to 1916. Michael's tombstone in the same
plot shows 1873 to 1944.
I haven't exhausted all of my avenues yet. I think Margaret's father John
was in the Union Army, and have obtained a 1907 obituary for John Canty in
the Huntington, WV Dispatch. I've requested the pension application from
NARA and hope that will confirm that I've got the same John Canty, but I
think the odds are pretty good.
Just thought that some of this information might be useful to someone else,
or better yet, that somebody could tell me something!
Thanks for the time,
Carol
