Just got records from NARA of Civil War service of John Canty. The basics
follow:
John Canty enlisted 28 Nov 1857 at New York City, was assigned to Batt. M,
3rd Regiment of U.S.___. Discharged 28 Nov 1862 by expiration of service,
near Fredericksburg, VA, a private.
John Canty, private, Co. A 1 D.C. Cavy was enrolled June 16, 1863 at
Washington, DC for 3 years and is reported on rolls from enrollment to
August 30 1865, present and on company muster out roll date Ft. Monroe VA

Married to Mary O'Brien 8 Aug 1872 in Cincinnati, Ohio by Father Baslem (?).
Children: Mike Canty, born 9/3/1873, Mag. Canty born 9/3/1874, Mary Canty
born 4/21/1877, and Marie (could be Katie) born 3/2/1882.
John Canty applied for an invalid pension based upon articular rheumatism.
This was probably about 1890, while living in Coal Valley, Fayette Co., WV
An affidavit of James P. Bowles and Joseph Clatworthy dated 19 May 1897
reports their knowledge of John Canty, and gives the residence location of
the two affiants as Mt. Carbon, Fayette Co., WV
John Canty died of cancer of the stomach on 29 July 1907. Pension documents
indicate that neither John nor his wife were ever married to anyone else,.
Mary O'Brien Canty's application for widow's pension included an affidavit
by John O'Brien, her brother, dated 10 July 1909, at which time John O'Brien
was reportedly 72 years old.
Also included was an affidavit of Michael O'Brien, another brother of
Mary's; he was reportedly 67 years old at the time, on 30 June 1909.
Both of the preceding documents were signed with a small "x", with a
notation "his mark" and a witness signature.
Other documents were submitted by Maggie (Margaret Elizabeth Canty) Smoot of
Marmet, Kanawha Co., WV and Mary (Mary Ann Canty) Twohig of Thayer, Fayette
Co., WV. Both of these were dated 1909. Other records reflect that Maggie
was married to "Richard" Hezekiah Smoot and that Mary Ann was married to
Patrick Twohig.
Mary O'Brien Canty's benefits were terminated upon her death, 13 Dec 1914 in
Cabell County, WV.
If anyone has access to Cincinnati, OH vital records, I'd love to get a
lookup for the marriage of John Canty and Mary O'Brien (8 August 1872 by
Father Baslem(?sp)). I am still trying to get the names of their parents.
Also, I think they were both born in Ireland, but I do not know where.
Be glad to hear from anyone that can match up with some of these names and
dates. Thanks, and happy hunting!
