Hi,
The name Canfell originated from Cantwell, and there are Canfells listed in
the 1930 US census and presumably in other census as well. Apparently the
old Irish pronunciation was Cantvell (pronounce the w as v as they do in
Europe) and that led to the phonetic spelling Canfell. There was also a
Patrick Cantwell from Ireland who turned up in Newfoundland as Patrick
Canfield in about 1810. I have also seen Cansell, Canfall, Canfel etc. Names
such as Cantrell might also get mixed up with Cantwell.
In my case I have a great grandfather Patrick Cantwell who was born in the
parish of Inistioge in Kilkenny in 1835, married in Australia under that
name but registered his children as Canfell. This name change happened quite
a lot in Australia in the 1800s but the other Canfells changed back to
Cantwell.
Regards
Michael Canfell.
