Message Board Post:
I am searching for the ancestors of my husband's Great Great Grandfather, John
Cantwell, who died in Long Island, New York, supposedly 1857. A daughter Catherine also
died around this time as well.
His wife, Mary (Readdon), and son William, born around 1852 in New York, left for
Australia from Boston in 1858. Mary and William settled at Doctors Creek, Ballan,
Victoria, in Australia. I think Mary chose Ballan because the other Cantwells already
living there were relatives of husband John.
William went on to have 15 children with 13 surviving. Three of his sons settled in New
Zealand.
Can any of the listers help me as we know nothing of his life in the US or Ireland; it is
like looking for a needle in a haystack.
Shirlee

My father-in-law was John Wilbur Cantwell, but it is not the same person
you are looking for. Good luck in your search!!
