Hello - I am a Cantwell descendent through Margaret Cantwell who married
David Jaques, an Old Ohio family.
Margaret was born August 1804 near Steubenville and I have lots of
interesting information if we are of the same family. I checked my record
and find a John Findlay Cantwell, born April 14 , 1820 and died in 1848.
He was a farmer and lived near Mansfield. In 1841, he married Caroline
Matilda Casebeer, also from Ohio, and we may not be of the same line if you
have records in 1860. However, John Findley did have a son John Findlay
who was born in 1848 and died in 1850 which is a bit young for your
relative.
There are a lot of Cantwells from this family in Ohio at that time. My
Margaret who married David Jaques was the grand- daughter of William
Cantwell, born in 1776 and died in 1858, and Nancy Ann Williams, born 1779,
and died iin 1850. The earliest Cantwell in my line married Margaret
OBrien a native of Ireland. Margaret was of royalty and her beloved was a
shoemaker, so her parents disapproved, and they run away and got married on
a ship to America.
I did not find any other "John" in your time frame, but I do have a book
called "Generation of the Uprights" by
Edward Norton Cantwell which sets out the families in detail (but not
always accurate in names).
If you find you need additional information from my record, let me know.
My research in the "Jaques" and Cantwell families has been interesting and
rewarding. AMELIA

I too, have Cantwell, Belinda, in Jackson Co. Ohio and the only
adult male in the 1820 census was a John Cantwell In Jackson Co.
Ohio. My Belinda married Levi Martin Mercer in Jackson Co. and I
have never found any proof one way or not that John is her
father. There was some more Cantwell's in Richland Co. Ohio too, a
will about 1850 if memory serves. Can anyone connect these?
