Captain John Cassin Cantwell - (Cantwell, Alaska is named after him, ed.)
Captain John C. Cantwell, U.S.C.G. retired died at his home at Sausalito,
California, on 7 October, 1940. His is survived by his widow, Florence
Godley Cantwell.
He was born in Raleigh, NC, on 9 January, 1859. He enlisted as a seaman on
1 July 1879, and was appointed Boatswain. he was appointed a Cadet on 7
June, 1880. Promoted on through the various grades, Captain Cantwell
reached the rank of Commander on 3 October, 1917. he retired 11 May, 1920
He made several Alaskan Cruises, served in a naval engagement in the West
Indies during the Spanish-American War and was also a veteran of the World
War.
He served at various Coast Guard stations and on various ships as follows:
Alert, Bibb, Woodbury, McLane, Corwin, Chase, Bear, Corwin, Rush, Colfax,
Morrill, Colfax, Alert, Morrill, Colfax, Bear, Nunivak: special duty, San
Francisco: McCulloch, Golden Gate, McCulloch, Manning, Windom, Onondaga,
Tuscarora: assistant inspector, 6th Lifesaving District; assistant
inspector, 13th Lifesaving District; McCulloch, Pamlico, Seattle District,
McCulloch, Naval Reserve Training Station. San Pedro; 12th Naval District,
4th Naval District, and Seattle District.
