Where can I get the book "Kilkenny: History and Society". My earliest
Cantwells also came from Kilkenny, from the town of Callan.

Subject: [CANTWELL] Cantwells from Inistioge, Kilkenny
My earliest Cantwell is a John Cantwell from the townland of Powerswood,
parish of Inistioge, Kilkenny. He lived from about 1800 to 1870 and married
Margaret Franey.
Their children included:
Michael, baptised 30th July 1831 in Inistiogue (Catholic Parish);
Thomas, baptised 15th March1833 in Inistiogue;
Patrick, baptised 27th February 1835 in Inistioge;
Mary, baptised 17th March 1837 in Inistioge.
Patrick married Mary Berkery in Australia on 31 December 1868 and I have
information about their descendants. I have not identified any record of the
other siblings in Australia and there is no record of them marrying in
Ireland.
In the book "Kilkenny: History and Society" eds.William Nolan, Kevin Whelan,
(Geography Publications 1990), there is a chapter on Inistioge immigrants in
Newfoundland. A Patrick Cantwell from Powerswood migrated in about 1810 and
became a shoreman in St Johns. In 1815 he married the widow of an Irish
planter there with an estate of 100 pounds. The marriage is listed in the
Catholic registry of St Johns under the names Pat Canfield and Mrs Catherine
Dower alias McDonnell. Since Powerswood is an area of only a few hundred
acres, it is likely that all the Cantwells from there were from the one
extended family and there may have been other Cantwell migrants to
Newfoundland from Inistioge.
I do not know if the above Pat Canfield retained the name Canfield or went
back to using Cantwell. I understand that the old pronunciation was
Cantvell, leading to the name being sometimes written down as Canfell,
Canfleld etc.
Hoping to hear from someone who can connect to any of the above,
Regards
Mike Canfell.
