I have Cantwellss that also come from Kilkenny, town of Callan. We have Ann
Tobin married to Thomas Cantwell who are the parents of Robert Cantwell
(born around 1845) who left Callan, Kilkenny after the death of Thomas.
Robert married Margaret Glancy (born ca 1857 in Cincinatti). They ended up
in Peru, Illinois.

Subject: [CANTWELL] Cantwells from New Brunswick
I would like to make a correction to a previous entry I made on the
Cantwell's of New Brunswick. I previously ASSUMED that William Cantwell
and Michael Cantwell were the same person (they both born in Ireland, about
the same age and had a son named Patrick). .... This was incorrect and I
learned one should NEVER assume !!!
I have recently found in the records of the St. Michael Roman Catholic
Church in Chatham, New Brunswick the Baptism records for some of the
children of both William and Michael Cantwell. I also found Michael
Cantwell in the 1851 census of Chatham, NB .... and William was living else
where during this time.
The census record of 1851 mentions that Michael Cantwell arrived to New
Brunswick in 1841, born in Ireland. The baptism for his first son (as per
the census at least) was in 1841. Michael's wife's name was Mary Ryan. In
the Chatham, New Brunswick Census of 1881, Michael is a widower.
William Cantwell's first three children were baptised in St. Michael's
also during the early 1840's, the first one being in 1842. William's
wife's name was Bridget Bowden. Bridget died in 1877 in Rexton, Kent
County, New Brunswick. William is a widower in the 1881 Census for
Dorchester, New Brunswick where he is living with his 2 sons. His death
certificate (in 1899 - Campbellton, New Brunswick) mentions he was born in
Kilkenny, Ireland.
I am now searching for information on both of these gentlemen with the
hopes they may have been related.

Brunswick
My earliest confirmed Cantwell is (1) William Edward aka Michael Cantwell
born about 1821 in Kilkenny, Ireland (according to his death certificate)
and was Roman Catholic. He died in Campbellton, New Brunswick, Canada.
Since it is my first time posting on the site, I will tell you all I know
about William Cantwell and his children in the event it helps someone else
... and in which case will help me in return. Please contact me if you
feel you are connected with this family or have any information on them.
(1) William Cantwell lived a long time in Rexton, Kent County, New
Brunswick, Canada. He was married to Bridget Bowden, (born about 1828 in
Ireland). Bridget died in Rexton, NB in 1877 at which time William moved
to Chatham, NB where his sons where living. He is found on the 1881 Census
as a widower. On the 1891 Census he is found living with his son, (2)
James Cantwell in Campbellton, NB where he died in 1899.
His children were all born in New Brunswick according to the 1861 and 1871
census of the Kent County area. The earliest confirmed birth I found for
one of his sons in the area was 1848.
Their children were:
2. Patrick Cantwell b. abt 1843 who later moved to Chatham, Northumberland
County, NB, Canada. I don't know any more about him.
2. Edward Cantwell b. abt 1844 who married Hannah McDonald in Kent County.
Edward and Hannah were found in Gaspe, Quebec, Canada in the 1881 census
with 2 girls ((3)Mary Jane and (3)Margret H.). They later moved to Calais,
Maine, USA. There they had a son named (3) William F. Cantwell born in
Calais, Maine who moved to Conway, New Hampshire. William F. Cantwell
passed away abt 1967 at Conway, NH.
2. Mary Cantwell b. 1846 married an Anderson. I know Nothing more about
her.
2. John Cantwell b. 1848 Rexton, NB, Canada married Helena (Lena) Hickey
and are found living in Chatham NB on the 1881 Census. He died on Sept 28,
1897. He had a few girls ((3) Elisabeth Gertrude b 1888, and (3)Agnes
Lena b. 1898) and one boy, (3) Thomas Edward Cantwell (born 1890). (3)
Thomas Edward is found on the 1901 Census living with his mother and his
stepfather John Gammon.
2. William Cantwell b. 1850 Rexton, NB, Canada followed the new railroad
(which he worked as a brakeman) to Conway, Carroll County, New Hampshire.
He married Emily Jane Clark in 1875 at Exeter, NH. They are found living
there on the 1880 census. According to Emily's Obituary they had no
children. William was still alive at the time of her death.
2. Thomas Cantwell b 1855 Rexton, NB, Canada is found living in
Boneventure County, Quebec in 1901. He later moved and married in
Campbellton, New Brunswick to Cathy O'Leary. To my knowledge they had only
one child who died young.
2. James Cantwell b. 1857 Rexton, NB, Canada. James Married Ellen (Ella)
Cassidy in 1881. They are found living in Campbellton, NB, Canada in the
1891 and 1901 census. He died in 1912 in Campbellton, NB, Canada. His
children are (3) Etta b. 1882 (my line) married to Joseph Henry Hachey
1902, (3) James William (Served in WWI) b. abt 1884 married to Marguerite
Helen Shannon and (3) John Montgomery b. 1888 married to Eva Boudreau 1931.
Etta (3) had three children (4) Harry, Opal and Viola. James William (3)
had 4 children Michael James Wallace (4) (died during WWII) and 3 living
children (1 boy 2 girls). John Montgomery (3) had one child who died at
young age.
2. Bridget Cantwell b 1859 married Noah McLean (born in PEI) and died in
1939 Campbellton, NB. There children included (3) Harry, Gertrude M.,
Lena, Frederick, Charles W., Mary Eliza McLean. (3) Gertrude M. McLean
moved to Conway, New Hampshire where she married her husband Ralph Winslow
in 1915.
