Hello everyone,
I have a question about the 1860 census for Dekalb co, TN,
and I'm hoping some in the list can answer it.
Pg. 117 has the family of James Cantrell and wife Lucinda.
The oldest daughter is 18 yrs. old. Her name appears to be
"Keziah". In the same household is a 72 year old woman,
possibly the mother or grandmother of James. Her name is
also "Keziah".
Two doors down, the family of Abel Cantrell has a 10 yr. old
daughter named "Keziah", and 2 houses away from them is the
residence of Lemuel B. Givans and his wife, 21 yr old "Keziah".
Page 125 has 8 yr. old "Keziah", daughter of Chesley and Lavina
Cantrell.
I'm pretty good at reading the handwriting in the census, and
this one is actually pretty easy. The same person enumerated
this section, so I was able to compare the way various characters
were written, and I came to the conclusion that "Keziah" was what
was written each time.
I must confess that I have never heard this name before tonight,
though it may be common in other parts of the country. I was very
surprised at the frequency of its appearance in just a few pages.
Does anyone know if this is the correct spelling?
What is the origin of this name?
Also, I found 2 women named "Tennessee". Was this a common name for
girls around 1840-1860?
Thank you.
