Hello All-
Briefly, my interest is in the following group who started in Spartanburg Co SC, then to
Marion Co Al, then to Hill Co TX and Erath Co TX. I got 99% of my information from Warren
Cantrell. If you want to take a look, I have a website at
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~shipleyharrison/Cantrell.htm#gen7
I look forward to sharing and learning new things about this family.
Thanks!
Bev Shipley
1. MARTIN7 CANTRELL (JOHN "MILLER"6, JOHN5, JOSEPH4, RICHARD3 CANTRILL, RICHARD
L.2, WILLIAM1 CANTRELL) was born 28 December 1796 in old 96th Dist., later Spartanburg
County, SC, and died 24 May 1879 in Lamar County, Alabama. He married CATHERINE
"RICE?" Abt. 1817 in South Carolina. She was born 17 September 1799 in South
Carolina, and died 18 November 1883.
Notes for MARTIN CANTRELL:
In 1820 Martin, Catherine and the first two children were recorded in Spartanburg Co., SC.
In 1825 Martin was one of the appointed executors of the will of his father. He did not
serve in that position. In 1830 Martin was recorded nearby his brother, Berry, In
Spartanburg Co., SC. The household included one male 10-15, one male and one female 5-10
and three males under 5 years. We know that one more male was born in Jan. 1830. In 1833
Martin moved his family to Marion Co., AL and they were recorded there in 1840. The
household included 12 persons age under 5 to 20-30. Several of these were not children. In
1850 he was recorded in Marion Co AL and he had real estate valued at $500.00 and they
lived in the southwestern part of the county. One son was listed at home. In 1860 they
were recorded in the same location and his land was valued at $800 and he had personal
property valued at $1000. One daughter was living at home and a married daughter on the
next farm. Sanford Co. was!
formed from part of Marion Co. 8 Oct 1868. Martin's land was in Twp 12, Range 15 of
the new county. In 1870 his land was valued at $300 and he had person property valued at
$500. The unmarried daughter, Sarah Jane, was still at home. The name of the county of
Sanford was changed to Lamar in 1877. Martin died 24 May 1879 and was buried near his home
in Lamar Co. In 1880 Catherine was recorded on the same farm. Her household included the
daughter, Sarah and Charity Cantrell, who was a mulatto girl that Martin owned in 1860, at
age 10 years. She was crippled. In 1873 she bore a child named Dianah. Catherine died 18
Nov 1883. Warren Cantrell was unable to locate their graves. (Cantrell, 16)

married REBECCA M. Abt. 1849 in Marion County, Alabama.
Notes for MELVIN CANTRELL:
Melvin accompanied his parents to Marion Co., AL where he grew to manhood. In 1850, Melvin
and Rebecca were listed in the western part of Marion County and he lived on a farm next
to his brother, Luther Rice. He owned one slave, an eight year old female.
Melvin was not located in the 1860 census of Ala. we know they were there as late as 1854
when one child was born. This son was with his uncle, David, in 1870 and it is possible
that Melvin and his wife were deceased. (Cantrell, 18)
Child of MELVIN CANTRELL and REBECCA is:
5. i. LEXIUS M.9 CANTRELL, b. August 1854, Marion County, Alabama.
5. LEXIUS M.9 CANTRELL (MELVIN8, MARTIN7, JOHN "MILLER"6, JOHN5, JOSEPH4,

Alabama. He married MISSOURI M. MAYFIELD 1872, daughter of ISAAC MAYFIELD and ALTHANA
MAYFIELD. She was born 1847, and died 03 July 1933 in Hill County, TX.
Notes for LEXIUS M. CANTRELL:
In the 1880 census, Lexius and Missouri were the parents of two sons. In the early 1880s,
Lexius moved his family to Texas and in 1900, they were recorded in Precinct #6, Hill
County, Texas. Three
children were at home and one was married and lived in Erath County, Texas. His uncle,
David Martin Cantrell, moved his family to Texas in the 1890s and lived in the fifth
Precinct of Hill County. Lexius'
uncle, Luther Rice Cantrell, had moved to Texas from Marion County soon after the war and
reared his family in Erath County. So when son William B. went to Erath County where he
married, he was near many of his cousins.
On the 1900 census Lexius' month and year of birth were shown as August 1854 and
Missouri listed hers as Dec. 1861 in Alabama. In the 1910 census they were recorded alone
in Hill County. He listed his age as 60 and Missouri for the first time listed her proper
age as 62 years. This would indicated that she was born in December 1847 in Alabama. One
married son lived nearby. In 1920, they were again
recorded in Hill County and he listed his age as 69 and again Missouri listed her correct
age as 72 years.
The date and place of Lexius' death have not been located (Cantrell,19).

STEWART 06 May 1893 in Erath County, Texas, daughter of THOMAS STEWART and MINNIE
THORNTON. She was born 22 August 1875 in Texas, and died 16 March 1963 in Wilbarger
County, TX.
Notes for WILLIAM BAIL CANTRELL:
William Bail accompanied his parents on the move to Texas in the early 1880s. He grew up
in Hill County, Texas.
In 1900, William and Bettie were recorded in precinct #1, Erath County where many of his
first cousins lived. They were parents of two sons at that time. They moved to Johnson
County, Texas where they
were recorded in 1910 with three sons at home and we know that one more son was deceased.
In the next few years he moved his family to Wilbarger County, TX. Two sons were recorded
at home William was a deacon in the Baptist church. (Warren Cantrell,20).
