Hello........my family is decended from William CANTWELL and Cyntha___?
(possibly Johnson) who is the father of Stephen Cantwell/CANTRELL b. 1812 in
Ala., d. before 1910 and Sarah JOHNSON CANTRELL......the parents of
ELIZABETH CANTRELL who married Thomas G. SPAIN. Stephen and his sister Bobby
kept the CANTRELL spelling and the rest of the children, including my
ancestor, James CANTWELL, went with the CANTWELL spelling. This has led to
much confusion and NO definate answer as to why these two kept the "old"
CANTRELL spelling when everyone else (the 11 others did not). Stephen was
the oldest son, but not the first child........there was a female child that
only lived about 5 years and the second child was "Bobby" who kept the
CANTRELL spelling, then Stephen was born and after him my ggrandfather James
Cantwell. There were 14 children. To make matters even more confusing both
Stephen and James married girls by the name of Sarah JOHNSON.......both from
Ark. by way of TN.
Stephen and his Sarah had seven children. There were five boys and two
girls.......Elizabeth was the last girl........b. ca. 1859 in ARK.........she
married Thomas Spain abt. 1875.
Thomas was born in TX in 1852. The first ofThomas' and Elizabeth's 11
children were born in TX . The remaining children were born in the Indian
Nation when Thomas moved his family. They were settled in the Chickasaw
Nation and purchased land in the Township 1 North, Range 6 West. I only
have the listings of eight children......they are Andrew, Thomas, Sidney,
Sarah, Emma, Nellie, James, and David. Apparently, in the 1900 census
Elizabeth said all 11 of her children were still living and her father
Stephen was living with them. By 1910, the Township was called King and
Elizabeth said only 8 of her children were still living and only one child
was still at home.
I don't have much information beyond this.....hope it helped. Sharyn
