This list is so new, I doubt there are enough people to see this yet.
But here goes anyway... I am trying to find my Granny's roots in the
Canton (may be spelled other ways, but sounds like) lines. She way
born May of 1885 and from what my cousin and I have thus far found may
have been in a boarding school in Louisville, Kentucky when she was
adopted. She always contended that she was Cherokee. She was adopted
by William H. Sterritt and his wife Mary Elizabeth Grismer Sterritt in
1893. She spoke about going to the World's fair, which was held from
June -October in 1893 and was held in Chicago. The assumption is that
her mother was Cherokee and her father may have been a coal miner from
West Virginia originally by the last name of Canton. She had told me
when I was a child about her "real" family and told her children on
her death bed about being adopted and what her real family name was.
They had often wondered why she had disowned her "adoptive" family and
then things made sense... If anyone on this list has any information
regarding the Canton line from Buffalo, Putnam County, West Virginia
(also the origin of William H. Sterritt) and possibly has heard family
legends to this effect...
