I have a James Cantley, b. 1774, Botetourt, VA, d. 1850, Mercer Co. VA (now
WV),
married to a Sarah Best (no other info). The Cantley Family Book written by
Hugh
Voress states:
From Cantley Family Book:
James was appointed Constable in Greenbrier Co., VA. He served in the War
of 1812,
enlisting on Sept. 13, 1813; was discharged on Mar. 19, 1814, serving at Ft.
Norfolk, Va. His mustering out pay for this service was $69.24. (36). He
apparantly did not marry.
According to some notes taken from computer, James Cantley, born about 1794
in Greenbrier County, VA Married Sarah Best and about 1827 settled near
Emmett, Arkansas. He was known as Captain Cantley; he was a magistrate
(JP). He must have died about 1862The account of settlement of his estate
is in Hempstead County courthouse. His son, William Cantley who acted as
administrator had problems in settlement due to freeing of the slaves.
Grandison Royston acted as attorned. Children of James and Sarah (Best)
Cantley were: (I don't have names of any children).
