Becky
Thanks for the information on how to find ''Our Children's Ancestry''
I had never thought of checking the Heritage Quest books online for this book.
Also, I had wondered if the WHITETAKER or ALLENs came from Old Sumter District, SC
formerly being part
of the Old Camden District. For those of you that have not checked out Sumter's
rootsweb page
do so
http://www.rootsweb.com/~scsumter/ ~ go to the Wills Project ~ you might find just
the
ancestor's will you are looking for. Many married into the CANTEY family. . . .or at
least you may
find will of other surnames that connect to your CANTEY line later.
Becky, I will check the online book at Heritage Quest and get back with the list if I find
any others
that might connect with our Benbow/Cantey family who removed from Old Sumter Dist. SC to
Montgomery County Al.
It is my understanding that there were more than one CANTEY family that had plantations in
AL or near
......... if my memory is correct, seems there were CANTEYs that settled near Columbus Ga
just over the state line into AL. Believe he may have been a James Cantey. If he was not
the first, he later came to take care of the Cantey plantation. Anyone on the list know
anything about these CANTEYs. I might not be correct, therefore, would like to know of
any CANTEYs that settled near Columbus GA, but actually lived in AL.

Subject: [CANTEY] RE: "Our Children's Ancestry"
Greetings All,
Thanks to all who have sent their Cantey line in. I'll get an outline update
posted soon. The more folks we add the easier it is for others to connect, or at least
get a direction for their research.
Virginia had queried about the book "Our Children's Ancestry" (that is
my Whitaker line). I only know of one hard copy, my Grandmother's, which is in the
hands of my Uncle and he won't let it out of his sight!! But the good news is that
its on 'HERITAGE QUEST'. A FREEBIE.... A lot of libraries subscribe to Heritage
Quest and you can access it there OR at home with your library card. (Cobb Co GA library
has this service.) Heritage Quest offers over 20,000 digitized genealogy/History books,
complete Census, PERSI Index, & Rev. War info. Completely searchable & Grand !
The book mentioned above is somehow just a wonderful publication, not completely
correct, but just outstanding. Sarah Cantey Whitaker Allen, the Author, is another
example of the Cantey heritage. She was completely BLIND and wrote the book with the aid
of her grand daughter. (Have been playing with getting it reprinted - will get back to
work on it.)
Speaking of books,
www.higginsonbooks.com has reprinted & bound, "Six
Generations of THE CANTEY FAMILY of South Carolina" by Joseph S. Ames, Ph.D. These
were a series of articles from 'The S C Historical & Genealogical Magazine"
in 1910. I'm in the process of entering his information and the results will show up
in the outline soon (I hope). Dr. Ames (John Hopkins Uni.) was an avid researcher of the
Cantey & Whitaker families among others but this is the only thing I know that was
published. His papers are located at the Maryland Historical Society in Baltimore.
[note: The taglines at the bottom of these messages all come from Dr. Ames articles.]
Tommy and Mary Lyn - am working on answers, hope others are also, will get back to you
soon. As well as a couple of more questions from Marylee.
Regards,
Becky

Mrs. A.S. Green, "The Making of Ireland and its Undoing," refers to the
O'Kainti family as one of the clans of bards to whom was entrusted the sacred duty of
transmitting the history of the people.
