Greetings All,
Marylee queried as to who the picture on the web page is, so here is what I have:
General James Cantey was born to James Willis Cantey & Camilla Floride Richardson
in Camden, Kershaw Co., SC in 1818. He served in the war with Mexico and was mustered out
in Mobile, AL, 1848. He then settled in Russell Co., AL and married Martha Elizabeth
Benton. They had three children Sam (who went to Texas), John (stayed in Russell Co), and
Mary who married James Cantey Alexander.
In July 1861, Colonel Cantey recruited the Fifteenth Alabama C.S.A. and enlisted for
the period of the war. The unit moved to Virginia and reported to General Joseph E.
Johnston being brigaded under General B. Crittendon. The 15th was with General Stonewall
Jackson in the Valley of Virginia Campaign, served at Front Royal, Winchester, Cross Keys,
continuing to Maryland. They surrendered at Appomattox Court House with 170 men.
General Cantey's health was impaired by the War and he died in 1874 at his home in
Russell Co., Fort Mitchell, AL. His wife lived until 1928.
His line: James>James Willis>James>John>William>George>Teige
If we have any descendants on the list - would love to hear more about his children as
well as any corrections.
