Becky,
Thanks for the information, but I have researched these lines and cannot link them to my
Thomas. I do have the census record in Ga. 1850 that says Thomas was born in SC, so I
think it is correct.
Unfortunately, all I have run into are brick walls. I live in SC and
have the records here at my disposal and have looked for years for a connection. I know
it's there somewhere. If you see anything else, please let me know.

with little luck. Can you help? My great-great grandfather was Jasper Newton
Cantey supposedly from Ga. He was born in 1850.The first time we find him in
a census is 1870 in Barnwell,SC. We have everything down from him, but not
before. We think there has to be a connection to the Cantey's you speak of.
We think his father might have been a Thomas Cantey from SC, not sure what
part of SC. We have found Thomas in Screven Co., GA., just across the SC
line married to Adelia Dell in 1850. Nothing else on Thomas until the civil
war. He apparently served with Nelson's Independent GA. calvary and died at
Alton prison in Illinois. We can find no evidence that he was the father of
Jasper, though. We searched for some church records in Barnwell, SC and
finally were able to look at them. We did find a Delia Cantey attending the
same church as Jasper's first wife, so think the connection is there. We
cannot find Thomas fitting in any of the Cantey lines we know of in SC. We
did find him on a census in Screven Co. GA. in 1850 and it says he was from
SC. I have tried to find him through Adelia, but no luck there. Any
information would be greatly appreciated.

Jill - This is from Dr. Ames article, maybe a clue lurking here for you.
1. Tiege Cantey
2. Capt. William Cantey d. abt. 1716 Charleston w. Jane, issue: 6 children
3. Samuel Cantey b. aft. 1704 d. 1762 Prince Frederick Parish, SC wife's
name Ann, issue: at least 3 children
4. Joseph Cantey b. Jan 26, 1735 Prince Frederick Parish d. 1781 will filed
in Probate Court at Camden, SC wife's name Ann. Issue: 5 children in will
5. THOMAS Cantey b. Jan 26, 1772, Camden Dist. SC d. 1809, St. George's
Parish, SC wife's name Susan Singletary, who, "with six small children"
survived him.* Only one whose name is known:
6. THOMAS SINGLETARY CANTEY who married 1820 Ann Kenna Harborn.
*note: City Gazette, Sept. 19, 1809
There Dr. Ames record ends. Think I have this line of descent correct,
but will make sure by entering it in program... this is just straight from
article. (Not my line - all corrections welcomed.)
I thought another possibility might be THOMAS RICHARDSON CANTEY, b. 28
Apr 1834 in Camden, SC, d. 9 Jul 1894. He was the son of James Willis Cantey
& Camille Floride Richardson. "Our Children's Ancestry" says he died
UNMARRIED.
Hope there is a clue here.
