This family is a set of my 2G Grandparents:
I believe it is possible that Frank Canty (born abt. 1838) is Francis Marion
Cantey (born 1836), the last son of James Cantey (born 1795) and Elizabeth Ann
Nettles. I have found no documentation to support this connection. Indeed I
have found no public record for either of these Canty men, other than the
military records below (which I cannot tie directly to either man). I only
have the similarity in names, and approximate birth and death dates.

The above information comes entirely from our oral and written family history.
The woman shown above as Martha Caroline Johnson appears in an indexed second
marriage record as Mary Carty and a subsequent census as Mary.
Military Info:
A man listed as F.M. Cantley served in the Confederate Militia 13th Brigade
under Captain John R. Johnson. They were organized as Prairieville Co.,
Kaufmann County TX, precinct no. 6 in July 1861.
A Francis M. Canty is listed as a Confederate soldier in the Texas 5th
Cavalry, Company B. (which was also called the Texas 5th Mounted Rifles). This
Cavalry Regiment was organized in September 1861 - its first commander was
Colonel Thomas Green.
Francis Marion Cantey, age 25, listed as died at the Battle of Val Verde, NM,
21 February 1862, Company B, Confederate Army.

Craven Co., for £5 current SC money, 360 acres. Whereas William Cantey, planter
of Craven Co., father of Josiah, on 2 Apr. 1713 mortgaged to the above Thomas
Smith all his plantation of 360 acres in Berkeley Co. granted him by his father
George Cantey; & whereas there was a proviso in the mortgage for the redemption
upon payment of £612:17:3 & interest on 2 Apr. 1714 in merchantable pitch by
delivery of 200 barrels yearly to Thomas Smith; & whereas the land was
forfeited; now Smith conveys the 360 acres to Josiah Cantey; & Mary, wife of

The Act of 30 November 1706 establishing the Church of England in the province
of South Carolina read that each parish was to provide a fit person for a
register of births, christenings, marriages and burials (excluding those of
negroes, mulattos and Indian slaves). Ten parishes were set up St. Philips
in Charles Town, and nine others: in Berkeley County, Christ Church, St.
Thomass, St. Johns, St. James Goose Creek, St. Andrews, and St. Denis; in
Colleton, St. Pauls and St. Bartholomews; and St. James Santee in Craven.
