There is a Cantey plantation near Manning, SC that is still owned by Dr. Cantey. I have
heard that Francis Marion used this plantation as a hiding place during the American
Revolution. I also heard that his mother was a Cantey. Don't know if this is true.
Does anyone know?

Tommy -
Haven't forgotten to answer, just have not completed entering what Cantey info I
have into computer. My father's name was FRANK and the name originally came from
Francis Marion also, so that is completely understandable. Will keep this in mind while
getting my files up to date.
Of Course, 'The Swamp Fox', Gen. Francis Marion was from SC, Cantey
neighborhood if I remember correctly. His tombstone: "Sacred to the memory of Gen.
Francis Marion who departed this life on the 27th February 1795, in the sixty-third year
of his age. Deeply regretted by all his fellow-citizens. History will record his worth
and rising generations embalm his memory as one of the most distinguished patriots and
heroes of the American Revolution which elevated his native Country to honor and
independence and secured to her the blessings of Liberty and Peace. This tribute of
veneration and gratitude is erected in commemoration of the noble and gallant exploits of
the soldier who lived without fear and died without reproach."
