The 63rd Virginia Infantry was one of a very small number of
Virginia regiments which never served with the Army of
Northern Virginia. It was raised under the authority grant-
ed to Major John J. McMahon by the Confederate War Depart-
ment dated April 9, 1862. The regiment was mustered into
Confederate service on May 24, 1862 for service in western
Virginia.
More detailed information about the various companies in
this regiment are as follows:

Hunter.

Lynch; most members of Company I, (1st) joined this company
when
Company I was disbanded in January, 1863.

nutt.
Company D, organized April 15, 1862 by Capt. John R. Fran-

that time.

number of men who had been serving in Compang G.
Company K, organized April 1, 1862 by Capt. J. C.
Killinger.
Like almost all Civil War units the Sixty-Third Virginia In-
fantry was frequently known by an alternate designation de-
rived from the name of its commanding officer. Names of
this type used by and for the regiment are shown below.
John J. McMahon's Infantry James F. French's Infantry Con-
nally H. Lynch's Infantry
Soon after being mustered into Confederate service the Six-
ty-Third Virginia Infantry, numbering eight hundred and sev-
enty officers and enlisted men, was assigned to the Army of
Western Virginia. Thereafter it served in a number of high-
er command assignments. It joined the Army of Tennessee,
assigned to the following brigade: Kelly's, Reynolds',
Brown's, and Reynolds' Consolidated.
The regiment was with the army in the battles ranging from
Chicamauga to Atlanta, 1863-1864, moved with John Bell Hood
to Tennessee, and was active in North Carolina. The regi-
ment lost about one-third of its forces in the Bettle of
Chicamauga and could register only 303 men (with 188 arms)
in December 1863.
On December 29, 1864, the regiment's strength had fallen to
only one hundred and twenty-nine individuals who were able
to fight.
In April of 1865, it was combined with the 54th Battalion,
Virginia Infantry.

at Durhan Station, North Carolina on April 26th, 1865.
