Butch
Thanks for the post.
I will be sending out a note to several CANTER researchers this
coming weekend.
I hope we will receive more activity on this list.

Hello all,
I am descended from a line of Canter's that I have traced back (to date) to
North Carolina.
The first entry I have of a Canter in NC is the 1790 census, Randolph
County, my g-g-g grandfather (born 1760-70, died 1830-40). He is not in
the 1800 census but reappears in the 1810, 20 and 30 census (Rowan County
in 1810 and 20 and Wilkes County in 1830). An Erasmus Canter appears in
the 1810 and 20 cenus, also in Rown County. In the 1850 census the noted
Erasmus Canter lists MD as his state of birth.
A look at MD records shows a cluster of Canter's in the counties of Prince
George's and Charles County in the late 1700's.
Right now, I an operating under the assumption that James and Erasmus were
related in some fashion and that James came from MD (note, several James
Canter's are found in the counties referenced above).
I have heard (family rumor) that James came to NC from MD and that he had
gone back to get his family when the 1800 census (NC) was taken, which
explains his disappearance from that state. Several other Canter's,
however, appeared on the 1800 NC census that were not there in 1790,
so??????????
Any help or guidance would be deeply appreciated.
