Isaac Canter (1805-1869), son of Isaac Canter, Sr., was born in the
area now known as Jackson County/Jefferson Twp. Ohio. He was reared a
farmer, and owned land adjacent to his father in Scioto County, Ohio. By
then Isaac, Jr. had married Susanna, as deeds show they sold their land
on Oct. 26, 1836: Isaac Sr. sold his land in 1838. Both father and son
returned to Jackson County, and are listed on the 1840 census in
Jefferson Twp.
On April 23, 1846, Isaac Canter Jr. was married secondly to Miss
Matilda, daughter of John Walls. They reared nine children: Lucinda,
John, Barney, William, Susanna, Isaac, David, Jonathan and Priscilla.
Isaac Canter Jr. died Dec. 6, 1869, at the age of 64 years, three
months and 10 days. Matilda, his wife, died July 20, 1882.
Amos Jenkins was a son of John and Betsy (Huddleston) Jenkins of
Bedford county, VA. and of Welsh descent. He was married Sept. 10, 1805.
to Hester Huddleston of Kanawha County, VA.
In 1811, Amos settled in Jackson County, Ohio and began farming which
he followed until his death in 1837. They had 10 children: Berry, Realva,
John, Harriet, Josiah, Ira, Enoch, Harley, Scienda, and Isabel. Hester,
his wife, died July 12, 1856.
Harriet Jenkins (1816 - 1900), daughter if Amos and Hester Jenkins was
born in Jackson County, Ohio. She was married July 5, 1845 to Harrison
Martin, and reared a family of five sons and two daughters.: Hugh,
William, John, Hester, James, Anna, and Samuel. Harriet died in Lawrence
County, Oh. Jan. 10, 1900, at the age of 83 years, one month and five
days. She was buried in the U.B. Cemetery, Oak Hill, Ohio. Harrison died
after 1896.
Anna Martin, youngest daughter of Harrison and Harriet Martin, was
married Nov. 11, 1869 to John canter. They had one child, Hattie.
John Canter, son of Isaac and Matilda (Walls) Canter was brought up a
farmer, and followed that occupation until July 31, 1862. He enlisted in
the army, served in Co. A of the 1st Regt., Ohio Volunteer Heavy
Artillery for three years, and participated in Burbridge and Stoneman's
Raids against Saltville. In 1865 he was honorably discharged as private
at Knoxville, TN.
John was a member of the church of Christ, being baptized in 1867.
Anna was a Methodist. John died Oct. 26, 1920 and Anna died April 18,
1925. They are both buried in Woodland Cemetery in Ironton, Ohio.
Hattie Canter, only child of John and Anna (Martin) Canter, was born
Aug. 6, 1886 in Lawrence County, Ohio. She attended public schools, and
remained with her parents until mariage. The wedding of Hattie Canter and
Elmer Cable occured sept. 30, 1903. Elmer was the son of Charles and Jane
(Heck) Cable.
About 1922, Hattie continued her education, and enrolled in the
Marting Hospital School of Nursing. She completed her studies, and Dr.
Marting appointed her to the staff of Deaconess Hospital as night
supervisor. Later she transferred to the new General Hospital, retiring
in 1956.
Elmer and Hattie had four children: Lena Mae (1904) married Elroy J.
Bryant, and had one child.. Betty Ann, Anna Opal Jane (1906 - 1930)
married Joseph Wagner, no children. John Rollen (1912 - 1966) married
first Roma Powers, no children. Second, Vivian Huffman and had two sons.
Thomas Louis and David Canter. Eloise Alfreda (1917 - ?) married Arvel R.
Eicher and had two children. Ruth Ann and Arvel Raymond.
The parents were members of the first Baptist Church in Ironton, Oh.
Elmer died Nov. 20, 1963 and Hattie on Sept. 30, 1969. They, daughter
Anna, and son John are buried in Woodland Cemetery, Ironton, Oh.
