Hanna Elizabeth Canter's grandfather was John Canter 1774-1858. John
was the son of Thomas and Peneloper Canter.
John's Father, Thomas died in 1777. Later his mother, Peneloper, died
in 1793. John had three cousins that were brothers, John 1761-1849,
Thomas 1767-1837, and a Truman Canter.
Historians usually confuse the two John Canters together as one. John
Canter 1774-1858 came to Ohio along with his cousins John and Thomas
about the year 1800. Truman settled in Kentucky. Thomas Canter is said to
have discovered the caves on one of his hunting trips. Although Thomas
visited his relatives in Ohio at different times, it wasn't until 1812
that he was a permanent resident. The Canter's came fom Fredrick Va.
Thomas made black powder at the cave and sold it to the hunters and
settlers. By 1812, the two John Canters were also at the cave with
Thomas.
By 1823, John (1774-1858) bought land in what would become Hamiltn
Twp; in southern Jackson County. John was one of the co-founders of it in
December 1825. There were three trustees, and they were; Samuel
Gilliland, John Canter, and John Cantwell.The treasurer was John Walls, a
relative of John's wife, Babara Walls.
John Canter(1761-1849) moved to Scioto County where he passed away in
1849. Thomas died somewhere in Jackson County in 1837.
John and Barbara Walls canter had nine children; Solomon, 1810; Enoch
1811; Juliana 1818; Amos, 1819; John Jr. 1820; Madison, 1827; Margarite
1829; Lorenzo Dow, 1833; and Sarah 1835.
John and Barbara's son, Amos married an Elizabeth Davis on Oct. 2,
1845. She was the daughter of James Davis from what is now Greenbrier
County, WV. They had 11 children: Cathrine, 1846; John 1848; Enoch 1850;
Lavina 1852; Alice 1855; Hannah 1858; William 1859; Albert 1860; Charles
1865; Jackson 1866; and George 1870. Their father Amos, pased away about
1872. Their mother later married a Jack Coleson. They are both buried in
Coalton Cemetery.
Hannah married a Robert Morris and had seven children: Carl, 1882;
Della and stella 1888; Jefferson 1892; Elmer 1893; Willard 1894; and Oma
1899.
John (1774-1858) and his three cousins John, Thomas and Truman now
have hundreds of descendants. They are scattered all over the United
States.
According the Canter historian,the late James allen Canter they are
from a line whose ancestors first appear in the state of Maryland and may
well go back at least 100 years before the American Revolution. John
(1761-1849), the brother of Thomas fought in this war and served the
State of Virginia.
