This note is in answer to Nan Bach's email on Jan. 30 to the Cannon list. I
am a descendant of Simcock Cannon and have a few pieces of information to
contribute. BEWARE OF INFORMATION ATTACHED TO SIMCOCK CANNON, HIS CHILD OR
CHILDREN, AND SOME OF THEIR DESCENDANTS. SOME PEOPLE ASCRIBE SURNAMES TO
THEIR SPOUSES WHICH ARE NO MORE THAN SPECULATION BASED ON ALLEGATIONS.
1. The story that Simcock CANNON married a woman named Hulda HOAD is myth so
far. There are no HOADS or HOODS connected with him, according to any data
found so far in VA, NC, or SC.
2. Russell CANNON and Jane [perhaps Campbell - NEVER PROVED SURNAME] did not
have a daughter named Jane, according to any data I have found.
3. James CANNON who married Mary POWELL had a daughter named Manila Jane, who
married a man named CALVERT.
4. There was a Jane CANNON in Lawrence Co., TN, when Carter CANNON and wife
Sarah [perhaps Latimer - NEVER PROVED SURNAME] lived there. This Jane Cannon
and Daniel ARCHER had a record of a marriage bond 24 Aug 1829; don't know if
they did marry, however. The identity of this Jane Cannon is not known;
however, the 1820 census for Carter Cannon in Lawrence Co., TN, shows a female
born 1810/1815, whom I cannot identify. That could have been the mysterious Jane.
5. It is possible that Jane Cannon who married Mathew Killingsworth was the
daughter of a Richard Cannon, who may have been a brother of Russell Cannon
and a son of Simcock Cannon. This Richard had a female in his household in
the 1820 census, who could have been the Jane Cannon you seek. Here is
information collected on him:
6. William Cannon, son of Russell, went to Kemper Co., MS.

From p. 369, notes of Art Cannon (deceased) of Maitland, FL,
"Simcock Cannon
Family" book, prepared by Dewel C. Lott, Route 3, Box 255,
Hartselle, AL 35640:
"Another man assumed to be the son of Simcock was Richard CANNON who also
obtained land in Union County as evidenced by sales to Elijah TURNER, (UDB
E/162) in 1797 and Grace HANEY (UDB F/174) in 1799). He was shown on the 1790
census of Union County with a household consisting of two males over 16, four
females over 16, and one male under 16. In the 1800 census of the Pendleton
District, near Simcock, Russell, and William CANNON, he and his wife are between
26 and 45 years of age and have three males from 0-16 years old and four females
from 0-16 years old.
"On 20 Sep 1801, Richard CANNON sold 106 acres located on the Middle Fork of the
Saluda River. One part of the tract, 23 acres, had been granted to Russell
CANNON and another 50 acres had been granted to William FLIPPO. Another deed in
1786 showed Simcock [CANNON] had land adjoining that of William Flippo, Dennis
DUFF, and Samuel BRUMMITT."
