Looking for parents of John Cannon of Virginia. He had one known son, Ellis
Cannon who was married to Elizabeth Coleman. Ellis Cannon was said to have
been a minister and later lived in South Carolina. His son Henry Cannon
migrated to Rabun Co., Georgia and left many descendants. Would like to
correspond with anyone working on this family or Cannon's in Virginia
IntoRoots1;
The earliest records of this John Cannon that I have seen show him to be
living in Overwharton Parrish, Stafford Co, Va. on 8 July 1745 when he
was married to Sarah Hammit Broderick. According to the parish records,
John and Mary had 5 children born in Stafford Co:
Ellis b 3 Jan 1748
John b 1 Feb 1749
Henry b 10 Apr 1752
William b 4 July 1754
Sarah b 9 Jun 1757
John Cannon's will mention 3 other children, Jesse, Mason and Lidde. By
1769, the family was in Culpepper Co VA, and then in 1784-5 moved to SC.
Ellis served in the Revolutionary war in the VA Continental Line and
then moved to SC, near present day Spartanburg. He was a farmer and a
lay Methodist preacher. Cannons Campground Methodist Church, for which
he gave the original land, is still in existence.
Henry and William also saw service in the Revolutionary War.
I have little information on John Cannon's parents, although one Cannon
researcher has speculated that his father may have been a James Cannon,
who lived in Spottsylvania Co and dealt in land in the area which later
became Culpepper Co, beginning in 1727.
I am related through Ellis' son, Lewis Cannon. Will be happy to share
information on this family.
