I recently found out that my paternal great-great-grandmother was a lady
by name of Mary (aka Maureen) Cannon. Her husband, my g-g-grandfather,
was Sean King, born in Gorthmellia, Co. Mayo, Ireland. They had at least
two children: a son named Francis (my direct ancestor), and a son named
(maybe) Seamus.
I'm assuming that Mary Cannon must be from Gorthmellia, too, or one of the
nearby villages. None of these folks ever emigrated; all born and died in
Ireland. Does this name sound familiar to anyone?
I know I'm losing it when I'm answering my own posts to the list, LOL, but
I
just got done talking w/ my uncle from "the other side" and he laid a few
clarifications on me about this particular twig of the family tree.
It appears that Edward King's family was full-grown when they all picked up
and moved to Gorthmellia from Clifden, and Sean at least was married. So my
Mary Cannon is (allegedly) from Galway, too. Whether she was from Clifden or
another town, I don't know. Conflict reigns as to how old Sean and Mary were
when they moved, but they were in their 20s or 30s.
Two of her grandchildren (one born 1891, the other 1893) spoke to my mother
of remembering Mary Cannon when they were small children (remembering her
well enuf to be afraid of her, as she was apparently well-known as a crabby
character in the village, LOL), so a birthdate of c. 1810 is not out of the
question, but that's just conjecture on my part.
Any takers for my corrected info? I sure do apologize for having to do this so
soon ;-)
God bless,
Kathleen
