Hi All, Found some more on my elusive Mississippi Cannon. I hope someone
can suggest where I might look to find some missing pieces.
In "Memoirs of Mississippi" and " Family Records-MS Revolutionary
Soldiers"
I found the following info:
Jesse D. Cannon, Sr. (native of Georgia) b. 1761 (VA) d. Lawrence Co., MS 1834
married in 1783 to Frances Hardesty b. 1762 (NC) d. 1820 (GA)
Children were:
Hannah b. 1795 D. 1849
Frances
Mary b. 1800
Joseph (died young)
Matthew (had 3 children, all dead by 1891)
Nancy b. GA 1812
Jesse D., Jr. b. GA 1815 d. MS 1859 m. Adeline L. Oatis (b. MS)
(seven children, one was Will C. Cannon b. 1856)
I'm trying to prove Matthew is the Matthew B. Cannon I'm looking for. In
the "Memoirs of Mississippi" the author states that Jesse D. Cannon and
Matthew Cannon were brothers living in Lawrence County MS. Jesse Sr. had
moved the family to Lawerence County, MS when Jesse Jr. was a very young
boy. (He was the youngest of the siblings.) Also, Matthew is referred to
as a prominent Judge. (I have lots of documents with him referenced as
judge, J.P. etc.) In my searching I managed to find Matthew and Jesse
living in Pulaski County Georgia, AND I found a reference to the marriage of
Matthew to Arcada Scarbrough Aug 23, 1820 in Pulaski County, Ga. Then, even
better luck, I found the obit for Arcinda Cannon, late widow of Hon. M. B.
Cannon April 20, 1860 in Lawrence County. (I don't think I've seen her name
spelled the same way twice in any reference. It's really butchered in the
Census.)
Now, my question, am I on the right track to prove Matthew B. and Jesse Jr.
are brothers? Am I missing an obvious source?
Also, my big brick wall is linking Matthew B. Cannon to my James Madison
Cannon (born 1823 in MS died around 1884 in MS). (father-son). I have been
unable to find any wills, or birth certificates that can link these two. My
only clue is that they are about the right ages and they lived very near to
each other. Is there some other way to prove the link other than wills and
birth certificates?
If anyone is interested in Jesse Cannon, Sr. I have more details about his
revolutionary service in the Virginia Navy.
Thanks!
