My ggrandmother Catharine Donnellan Carberry's sister
Bridget
Donnellan CANNON died 17 Jan 1916 and was buried in an
unmarked grave in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, in a section
belonging to the Little Sisters of the Poor, who operated an
old
age home in Germantown, Philadelphia, where Bridget spent
her
final years. On the 1910 census, she said that she was the
mother of
4 children, two of whom were still living in 1910. On that
census she
and her sister Catharine were at the old-age home, but
Catharine
soon left for the Roxborough home of her son, where she died
in 1912. Catharine, b. 1826, is buried in the St. John the
Baptist Church cemetery in Manayunk. Bridget was born about
1832 but the
date of her arrival in Philadelphia is unknown (Catharine
arrived in Philadelphia in 1866).
Less than a hundred feet away from Bridget in the cemetery,
the
graves of these Cannons are marked by a single, large
headstone:
Edward W. Jr., 1949 - 1993, Edward W., 1923 - 1992, and
Madeline
A., 1919 - 1986. The St. John the Baptist parish records
have a
"Birgetta" Cannon (must be Latin for Bridget) as a baptismal
sponsor on 27 Aug 1876 for Edward, son of Charles CANNON and
Maria CLIFFORD. There is a 6 May 1902 marriage of Edward
CANNON to Theresa MCINTYRE.
My problem is that the 1900 and 1880 censuses have no
Bridget of
the right age in a household with a son Edward. The Philly
city
directories point to Bridget being the widow of James, but
the only
James Cannon with wife Bridget (right age) that I can find
in Penn. censuses is out in Carbon Co. There is a Bridget of
the right age in Germantown, Philadelphia, on the 1900
census, with children John and Cecilia; this one was working
in the woolen mills in 1870, the same occupation of her
sister Catharine at that time. Bridget's
church in Germantown does not have records from the early
1900s
and earlier, so I have no other conventional means of
pinpointing
which if these Bridgets is Catharine's sister.
Does any of the above sound familiar to someone? Thanks for
any leads and suggestions.
