Here's a group sheet with some of the info I have on Edward Cannon. Much
of the info has come from other researchers and still needs hard
confirmation. Let me know what you think of it. I'd be grateful for any
info on this family that you may have, as well!

From "Wainwright and Related Families" by Emerson B.
Roberts; Some
circumstances not fully explained by the records surround the removal
of
Stephen Cannon to Maryland. On 6 OCT 1664 the Hon. Philip CALVERT informed
the Provincial Court of MD that one Stephen CANNON, servant to Mr. John
PATE
(of Gloucester Co., VA), had been apprehended by William NODIN at Francis
BARNES' upon Kent (Island) and that Cannon had afterwards run away from
Nodin
and was "entertained" by said Barnes. The Court directed an order sent up
to
Kent to said Barnes for the apprehension of said Cannon. (Arch. MD Vol.
XLIX,
page 275). Prior to 1670, one "Thomas DAVIS, carpenter" appeared in
Somerset
Co. in whose early records we find him frequently mentioned. On 10 JAN
1670 a
soire facias was issued in Somerset against Thomas Davis, carpenter because
of
a debt of 430 lbs of tobacco due by him to James WEEDON. James died and
his
widow, Lucy, m. Francis JENKINS, and at the suit of Jenkins and Lucy,
executors of the dec'd Weedon, Somerset Court on 9 NOV 1675 directed
execution
of the soire facias against "Stephen Cannon, ALIAS Thomas Davis,
Carpenter".
(Princess Ann, 0.7 reverse, page 21). As Thomas Davis, carpenter, he m.,
SEP
1671, Judith BLOYCE, dtr of Thomas Bloyce. The marriage record is in the
IKL
book, the oldest Somerset record. Further and conclusive proof of the
identity
of Stephen Cannon with Thomas Davis, carpenter, is in Liber AZ, folio 465,
Somerset County Court, 20 JAN 1674, as follows: "This day to witt the 13
January 1674, This writing was publicly read, viz:-
"Know all men by these Presents that I, Stephen Cannon, of Somerset
County in the Province of Maryland, Carpenter, who did formerly go
by the name of Thomas Davis of ye County and Province aforesaid,
Carpenter, do signifie by these Presents that my absolute proper
name is Stephen Cannon, and I, the said Stephen Cannon Do from
henceforth disown the name Thomas Davis, Yet nevertheless as
formerly Thomas Davis standing engaged to any person or persons
whatsoever, I, Stephen Cannon do by these presents promise to make
satisfaction to all persons whatsoever all Legall dues from Thomas
Davis aforesaid absolutely Stephen Cannon in witness whereof I have
herewith set my hand this 13 January 1674.
Stephen Cannon
Test: Thomas de la Hay
Edm: Beauchamp Stephen Cannon is identified with the early
record
of Stepney Parish, one of the original MD Parishes, and possibly he was one
of
its founders. In March 1671, he was a member of the Grand Jury that
decided
that sermons should be preached regularly, and appointed 4 places (homes of
planters) as preaching stations. Note that in early Somerset there were 2
persons by the name of Thomas Davis. One of these is our Thomas Davis,
carpenter, alias Stephen Cannon. The other is Thomas Davis, tailor. The
wives of both men, incredibly, were both named Judith. The wife of Thomas
Davis, carpenter, was Judith BLOYCE and the wife of Thomas Davis, tailor,
was
Judith BEST. Our Thomas Davis was born Stephen Cannon. To make his escape
from VA, he assumed the ALIAS Thomas Davis, lived, married, and prospered
under that name in Somerset, and then confessed his secret when the time
and
occasion made it safe to do so. A warrant for 200 acres in Somerset was
issued
24 OCT 1674 to Stephen Cannon (Land Office, Liber WC 2 F 34). This was the
first land to come into his name. The first survey book for Somerset Co.,
yet
in existence in the Library of the PA Historical Society in Philadelphia,
contains the original surveys for Stephen Cannon of "Dudley", a 500 acre
tract, 12 NOV 1675, and 100 acres "Noncaster" and another tract surveyed 17
NOV 1675 (Original Somerset Surveys, folio 76). The original signature of
Stephen Cannon is affixed to the document. Of the 5 dtrs of Stephen and
Judith
Cannon, 3 are lost to the records and may have died early. Stephen Cannon
died
between FEB 1699, when he patented 100 acres "Cannons Peace" and FEB 1709,
when Peter Body (Doughty) sold his wife's share of her father, Stephen
Cannon's, estate.
