From a letter written by Evans Cannon on December 11, 1987
In 1781, Rasha Cannon and his mother (the former Elizabeth Cannon)
were at the home of Rasha's grandfather, William Cannon, when it
was invaded by Col. Tarleton, Bloody Bill Cunningham and others
in a effort to secure the payroll for continental soldiers, which
was in William's possession. When William refused to tell where
the money was hidden he was killed, having only a hickory walking
stick, with which to defend himself. Elizabeth and Rasha were
taken captive and carried into North Carolina. After the revolution
ended, Henry Cannon, went searching for his sister Elizabeth. He
found that she had died in childbirth and Rasha was living with
people unfriendly to him. He took Rasha and adopted him as his own
son.
