Hi!
My name is Jean Emily Cannon and I am also a descendant of Nathaniel Cannon.
My line descends from his son Allen. I'm relatively new at documenting this
info -- I've got lots on paper and keep it in a notebook but have never
actually documented anything on the computer. Just got a home computer and
haven't gotten around to putting the info together. Joined the Cannon-L
list mostly out of curiosity and never really expected to run up on a
"cousin" so soon.
Anyway, this is how my line goes and the info that I know (most of which has
been handed down to me and some of the info I have actually came from the
dates on the graves. My father was raised in Wilkinson Co and I grew up in
Houston Co (which is only 60 miles away from Wilk Co) so I spent lot of my
childhood visiting cemetaries and hearing about family history from older
relatives now gone.
I have pictures of Nathaniel and Frances Sumner's tombstones at Mt Olive
Church in Wilk Co and will scan them and send to you if you'd like. The
tombstones are fairly new (look like VA headstones) and may have been placed
there by some other descendant. The church still has services once a month
(I think it is a primitive baptist church.) Anyway, the church is very
sweet and in a grove of hickory trees (they turn bright yellow in the fall)
and are hung with Spanish moss. I am told that someone in the congregation
may still have the church records but I have never made it to one of the
services to ask.
At the moment I can't find pictures taken in the other cemetaries I've
mentioned below that are in Wilk Co, but if necessary I can always take them
again as my family is still in the Warner Robins GA area.
1. Nathaniel Cannon (tombstone says "Nathaniel Cannon, Continental Line,
Revolutionary War, 1760 - 1844")
m. Frances Sumner (tombstone says "Frances Sumner, W. of Nath. Cannon,
Sr, 1778 - 1850, born SC")
2. Allen Cannon, d. 1848
m. Rachel Rigby (I think she is buried at Big Sandy Baptist Church
in Wilk Co)
3. William Franklin Cannon Sr, b 19 Feb 1841, d 31 Aug 1903,
buried in Masonic Cmty, Irwinton GA (Wilk. Co)
m Mary E. Butler, b 2 Dec 1844, d 8 May 1911, same place of
burial as husband.
4. William Franklin Cannon Jr (according to my father, he
is buried in Tampa FL)
m. Ellen Smith, b 22 Aug 1882, d 28 Jul 1958, buried
in the Stubbs Family Cmty, Irwinton GA (Wilk. Co)
5. Robert Reginald Cannon, b 14 May 1904, d 21 Feb
1981, buried in Tampa FL (alongside his father)
m. Doris Vesta Brown, b 17 Mar 1911
6. Algernon Brown Cannon, b 16 Feb 1934
m. (Nov 1955) Janet Emily Minix, b 6 Jan
1937
7. Jean Emily Cannon, b 20 Mar 1957
About 20 or 30 yrs ago, a man in Wilk Co GA (Joe Maddox ?) wrote a book that
contained all the county genealogy info that he could find. (My father has
my grandmother's copy -- they are hard to come by now but there is one at
the Washington Memorial Library in Macon GA.) He documented cemeteries, and
included all the info on each person at each cemetary, as well as included
copies of wills of people from the county. What's amazing is that he
amassed his info on index cards and typed it up himself!!! -- aren't
computers a blessing!!! Anyway, I have a copy of Nathaniel Cannon's will
from that book if you are interested, I could forward that too. There is
also a book at the Washington Memorial Library (don't remember if it is
another one of Maddox's books or a part of something else) that lists all
the marriages in the county.
Hope this info might at least be interesting, if not somewhat informative.
I am interested in finding out who Nathaniel's ancestors were and where they
came from. Do you have any information in that regard?
Thanks,
Jean Cannon
