Hello Florence and all CANNON ROOTERS:
Florence, I must admit that you captured my undivided attention for a
time with the interesting thread you have going in regard to John
CANON/James CANNON 1755 SC lineage. I wish much success in tracing this
line.
It was especially interesting to read about John CANON and his wife Mary
A.'s daughter named Mary. Even though I did not see any further
information on her, I quickly speculated that I had possibly linked my
Mary CANNON to her parents and other ancestors. But, then further study
of your wonderful notes made it unlikely that this Mary was the same
person I am tracing due to conflicting geography and timeline
differences. Reading further in your notes, my hopes rose again when I
discovered another suspect named Mary CANNON, the daughter of John
CANNON, Jr., but again the timeline is wrong for this second Mary to be
the same Mary Cannon I am tracing (with very little progress). It would
seem that NC & SC were rife with Mary CANNON's in this time frame.
I subscribed to the CANNON-L thinking I might get a hit some day in
regard to my 3-greats grandmother Mary CANNON who married Nathaniel
Dacus (1779-1852) in Pickens Co., SC??? about 1805. The 1830 Pickens
Co., SC Census lists Mary as a female born 1780-1790 in the household of
Nathaniel DACUS, a male born 1780-1790, along with seven children.
Nathaniel and Mary removed their family to Cherokee Co., AL before 1840.
The 1830 Pickens Co., SC Census only lists three households with the
active surname of CANNON: Jane CANNON, Elijah CANNON, and a James
CANNON. Earlier SC censuses show other CANNON households in upstate
South Carolina: William and Simcock CANNON, 1800 (Greenville Co.);
Henry, William and Jon CANNON, 1810 (Greenville Co.); and Henry,
Theophelus, and Jesse CANNON, 1820 (Greenville Co.)
According to family tradition my Mary's maiden name was CANNON, but I
have no proof of it beyond the words of two old family sources and an
undocumented reference found in a Newberry family genealogy book.
Now, as to my conflicting information: Mary (CANNON) DACUS is listed in
the 1850 Cherokee Co., AL CENSUS as a 65 year-old female, born 1785 in
Virginia and not North Carolina as I inferred from your notes. So, it
would definitely appear that the timeline for the Mary CANNONS' listed
in your e-mail do not fit my ancestor in any respect. Anyway, I thank
you for arousing my interests in CANNON-L again. Best wishes to all
concerned.
