I very much appreciate your rapid and very complete response to my inquiry.
I am trying to determine the origins of my g.g. grandfather, James L.
CANNON, who is shown in the 1850 Gibson County, Tennessee census and last
shown in the tax list for that county in 1854. I do not know his parents
nor whatever happened to him. One family "story" has it that his daughter,
Hepsey Ann CANNON, my g.grandmother, was the cousin of Joseph Gurney CANNON,
the famous Speaker of the House. If there is any truth to that, then James
L. CANNON would have been Joseph's uncle. I go to the Tennessee State
Archives almost every Saturday morning studying old documents trying to
solve this family mystery. I thought I had seen where Newton and Rachel
CANNON had some kind of connection ( I think I saw a deed with their name
on it) to Gibson County, Tennessee, which is why I asked the question in the
first place. Thanks for the help.
