Carlene,
Thank you so much for your prompt reply. I appreciate the new
information you provided. I hope to go to the Nabb Research Center at
Salisbury State University, MD, in the next few weeks and I will see what I
can find on the NUTTER surname.
Since I sent the first message I did some more homework in my own material.
(I don't pursue the CANNON line as much as I should.) Listed below is the
abstract of the probate of William Cannon's will. I found this on Page 150
of the Calendar of Sussex County, Delaware Probate Records, 1680-1800 by Leon
deValinger, Jr. published by the Delaware State Archives Commission in 1964.
"Cannon, William. Planter. Will. Made Aug 17, 1780. Heirs: wife Mary
Cannon; sons William Nutter, Daniel and Hughett Cannon; daughters Priscella,
Ester and Levinia Cannon, Sarah Nichols and Mart Jacobs; Jesse Clarkson (son
of daughter Major Clarkson). Exec'r, son William Nutter Cannon. Wits.,
Levin Cannon, William Jacobs, John Marine. Prob. Aug 15, 1783. Arch. vol.
A63, pages 142-143. Reg. of Wills, Liber D. folios 18-19. (Note: vol. A63,
page 143 mentions Sarah Jacobs)."
Even though I was aware of the custom of the time to use the surname of
the wife in that of the first son, I wasn't confident enough to say that Mary
Cannon's own surname was Nutter. Your material together with mine would seem
to reinforce this. Also, while there appears to be some variation in the
names of the children on our two lists I think they can be explained thus.
Your Anglet is probably the Hughlett in the will. Clearly, Easter and Ester
and Levina and Levinia are further spelling variations of the same names. I
would recommend the spellings used in the will especially for the latter as
that name comes down in my family line a number of times spelled Lavinia.
If you like, send me your address and I will send you my family group
sheets on William Cannon and Lavinia Cannon's spouse, Lowder Hearne. One of
their children, Mary Katherine Hearne, married my g-g-grandfather, Henry
Bacon.
Regards,
George Bacon
