Descendants of James David English
Generation No. 1
1. JAMES DAVID1 ENGLISH1 was born May 04, 1804 in perhaps Sussex Co.,
Delaware1, and died Aft. 1848 in Mt. Sinai, Dearborn Co., IN1. He married
NANCY ELIZABETH CANNON1 in perhaps MD or DE -- no record Dearborn Co., IN1.
Notes for JAMES DAVID ENGLISH:
James D. English ran for coroner of Dearborn County, Indiana, in the fall of
1848 on the Democratic ticket. He lived at Mt. Sinai, Dearborn Co., IN.
The death of James' wife Nancy Cannon English was listed in the Democratic
Register of 07/31/1873, Dearborn Co., IN.
Mt. Sinai, in the northwest corner of today's Hogan Township, was developed
around the village church, a Methodist congregation. John Durham immigrated
there from Delaware after the War of 1812. From 1840 to 1890 the community
had a post office called Crozier. In the mid-1800's to the early 1900's,
there was also a blacksmith shop, a school and a store.
-------- Looking for an English link from eastern US:
Joseph English was listed as serving in Captain Ricords' Company, Delaware
in the War of 1812. There is also a Joseph English who served in 4 regiment
Mounted (Evans') Militia from Indiana. Stephen English served 5 Regiment
(Paddack's) Indiana Militia.
The surname English appears in the New World early on. Mungo English and
Thomas English were both listed as early Virginia planters. Mungo English's
plantation was located in the Parish of St. Peters and St. Paul in 1704.
Thomas' plantation was located in Isle Wighte County in 1704.
Charles and John English, both of Pennsylvania, bought land in Dearborn
County, Indiana, on Sept. 19, 1815. Charles bought land in range 01,
township 04, section 28. John bought land in range 01, township 04, section
32. These sections would join at the SW corner pr section 28 and the NE
corner of section 32.
I find an Asa or Asia and an Aston English, all who served in 2 Regiment
(Lot'Z) Pennsylvania Militia. There is also a Benajah English who served in
the 1st Regiment (Biddle's) Pennsylvania Militia. Levi English served 1
Reg't Art'y (Prevost's) Pennsylvania Volunteers. A Levi English also served
4 Detachment (Rush's) Pennsylvania Volunteers. Michael English served in
Thompson's Regiment Pennsylvania Militia.
I am able to find Charles English who served in the War of 1812 in 5
Regiment (McDowell's) Virginia Militia. There are also several John
Englishes listed as serving from Virginia in 36 Regiment (Rennon's),
Virginia Militia; 41 Regiment (Bramham's), Virginia Militia; 90 Regiment
(Wright's), Virginia Militia; and John N. English who served in 29 Regiment
(Boykin's), Virginia Militia. No Charles nor John English served in the War
of 1812 from Pennsylvania.

Notes for NANCY ELIZABETH CANNON:
Several Cannon surname researchers on rootsweb show a connection from
Summerset, Dorchester Co., Maryland to Sussex Co., Delaware. Which would
line up with Nancy's marriage to James D. English of Delaware. Cannon
immigration from Ireland is also shown in rootsweb.
Other Cannon family members buried at Mt. Sinai--
Charles W. Cannon b. 09/22/1861 d. 03/11/1894 (nephew?)
Isaac Cannon no dates - father
Mary Amanda Cannon (age 2 months) b. 02/1848 d. 04/04/1848 (niece?)
Orison Cannon no dates - brother
The community of Sparta located in Sparta Township, Dearborn County, first
began to give way to the pioneer's axe in 1812. Most of the settlement came
after the war of 1812 - 1815. Many of the early settlers were from Maryland
and Delaware.
Families whose descendants later intermarried with the Bruces were among
these early settlers. Gilbert Givan emigrated from Maryland in 1818. Thomas
Heaton emigrated from Green County, NY, in 1818. Noah Davis emigrated from
Maryland in 1818.
A James Cannon, resident of Hamilton Co., Ohio, purchased land on Dec. 30,
1801, in the area between the Miami River survery and the Virginia Military
District--a land which was being settled by Quakers from North Carolina.
James' 1801 purchase was in range 5, township 2, section 27.
On Dec. 31, 1804, James Cannon, a resident of Montgomery Co., Ohio,
purchased land in the same general area in range 11, township 01, section
21. Range 11 and range 5 were next to one another (east to west) in the
between the Miamis survey. James' age is appropriate to have been an uncle
of Nancy Cannon.
Early land records of the Cincinnati, Ohio, land office show that a James
Cannon of Miami County, Ohio, purchased land in Dearborn County. James
purchased on Dec. 03 1813 land in range 6, township 08, sections 28 and 29.
Section 30 of R 6 T 8 was purchased by Cephas Carey, also a resident of
Miami County, Ohio, on Jan. 29, 1811. These sections would have been next to
one another from east to west in the Indiana territory. Thomas McClish Carey
bought section 19 R 6 T 8 which would have been directly north of section 30
purchased by Cephas Carey Thomas' purchase was 20 years later--11/25/1831.
Mrs. J. D. English, died 07/30/1873, Democratic Register of 07/31/1873.

Notes for VINA TEBBS BRUCE:
Vina Bruce and Arnd Robert Snyder were married at the home of her parents,
Benjamin Rumsey and Elizabeth English Overman Bruce. The Bruces lived on
Conwell Street in Cochran (later called West Aurora), Indiana. Vina and Bob
were married by S.B. Davies, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Aurora.
Vina had a keen ear for stories and she loved people. Her daughter Mildred
says that she never missed the chance to go out. She kept her hat and a good
apron near the front door in case the opportunity would arise.
Vina had many witty pithy sayings that her grandchildren remember. Erma, who
was manic depressive, threatened one time to jump into the Ohio River and
kill herself. Her mother Vina retorted, "Go ahead, they'll have to go to
Pittsburg (up river) to fish you out."
Vina and her daughter Erma huffed and puffed at each other, but were close
companions. The belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star and traveled to
lodge meetings frequently. They also were identified by Mildred as two of
the white-robed persons in a photo taken in the Aurora Riverview Cemetery.
(The Ku Klux Klan was seen as a social organization and many persons were
members in Aurora in the 1920's.)
Vina was active in politics after the franchise. Vina's grandfather James
English ran for county office in the 1840's. Her daughter Mildred also was
quite active in politics.

Notes for ARND ROBERT SNYDER:
Bob Snyder began working in Cochran, Indiana, (now west Aurora) at the store
of James M. Wheeler when he was about twelve years old. He purchased the
store and its contents for $300 from Margaret N. Wheeler on April 18, 1899.
Margaret released him from his mortgage on October 18, 1900. At that time
Margaret Wheeler was living in Allegheny Co., PA. We presume that Mr.
Wheeler had died by 1900. Mr. Wheeler was very fond of Bob Snyder, and he
presented him a gold pocket watch in appreciation of his hard work. The
inscribed watch is now owned by Bob's grandson Charles Steuver.
On October 1, 1900, Bob purchased the property of Sarah J. Hart, widow of
George W. Hart. The property was located in Cochran, IN, "commencing at the
point on the South line of the Aurora and Laughery Turn Pike Road (Conwell
St. today) and distant fourteen feet from the NW corner of lot number 4 in
William Wheeler's subdivision of said quarter section." The purchase also
included a strip of land bought in 1874 by John Brison and William W. Brison
from Alfred O. Gould and his wife Mary Louisa Gould. The property had
belonged to Charles H. Wheeler at one time, but was assigned to Frank B.
Shutts, in settlement of indenture. John, William and Josie Brison sold
property to James M. Wheeler in November of 1876. John Wheeler and his
sister Lulu Wheeler also sold James M. Wheeler property in June of 1886 for
$50. These deeds and descriptions were part of the personal records of Bob
Snyder's. Bob and his wife Vina mortgaged the property in 1910 for $2,000.
The home of Bob and Vina and their store still stand in Cochran to this
ay( 1998). The store has not operated as a grocery since the 1950's.
A. R. Snyder was a Republican. Before the franchise was granted to women,
Vina took an interest in politics. She felt it was her duty to support her
husband's political interests, and became a Republican. Bob Snyder has a
keen interest in business and good sense in investments. He became an
investor in the Aurora Cemetery Association and an officer in the Peoples
Building and Loan Company. Bob sold his grocery business at age 44, took his
children out of school, and retired to the Florida property that he had
purchased near Duneden. The family stayed in Florida for one year and then
returned to Indiana. His daughter Mildred returned to Aurora High School.
