I'm searching for Simcock CANNON or KENNON parents; and, at this moment, I
don't know if Simcock is a first, middle or nickname. To complicate things,
his name is found as both KENNON and CANNON in the early VA and SC records.
Below are recorded references to Simcock CANNON/KENNON; and secondly,
speculation on Simcock being the son of William CANNON and Judith WOODSON.
If you are working the CANNON/WOODSON line, please respond; and, if you are
aware of anyone working this line, please consider sending their name and
address to me or pass this message to them.

The earliest known record of Simcock CANNON is from Amelia Co., VA, probably
when he paid his first poll tax, in 1751. Two years later he was found in
Prince Edward Co.; however, the reason is that he was in the part of Amelia
Co. which became Prince Edward Co. in 1752.
The will of John RUDD II (Jane RUDD's father) filed 05 Jan 1753/54 in
Chesterfield CO., VA: Mentions Jane Rudd CANNON/KENNON's son Ruscill. Simcock
KENNON, son-in-law, was one of two executors.
Simcock CANNON was appointed Constable of Prince Edward County, Virginia by
the court in 1756 to take the place of Daniel Davidson.
The will of Edward X (his mark) McGehee, of Cumberland County, was probated 28
Jan 1771, which devised to son John, 7 slaves and 700 acres of land in Prince
Edward County (Virginia) joining land of Jacob McGehee, Simcock CANNON and
George Walton;.......etc.
In 1774 Jane CANNON did not release dower when Simcock CANNON sold his
Charlotte Co., VA, land; thus, she may have died by then.
In 1778 Russell CANNON of District 96, SC sold land in Prince Edward Co. VA.
Appears to be land owned by Simcock CANNON.
A deed in 1786 showed Simcock had land on the Middle Fork of the Saluda River,
96 District, SC, adjoining that of William Flippo, Dennis Duff and Samuel
Brummitt.
In 1787 Simcock CANNON of 96 District, SC, leased 105 acres to Russel
CANNON of same district, middle fork of Saluda River.
In 1791 Simcock CANNON of Wilkes Co. GA sold to Elijah Williamson 287
acres in Franklin Co. GA. Witnessed by Russell CANNON
Simcock CANNON is in the 1800 Greenville Co., SC, census, and ALSO the 1800
Buncombe Co., NC, census. He does not appear in any state census in 1810,
unless his name is horribly mangled.

A. Two researcher have suggested that Simcock CANNON is the son of William
CANNON and Judith WOODSON based on the following.
(1.) Research of the late Lovell K. LOVETT (Mrs. Carl), 3819 Cambridge
Avenue, El Paso, TX 79903 is shown below. Her late husband was a descendant
of Judith (Cannon) KENDRICK, daughter of Russell and Jane CANNON.
Jack R. Lovett, son of the late Lovell K. LOVETT, submitted his mother's
research to GenServ.

(2.) Mary Gregg, 3810 Valley View Road, No. 208, Austin, TX 78704 speculates
that John CANNON and Hester/Esther PLEDGE are the grandparents of Simcock
CANNON. After John CANNON died, Hester married Abraham CHILDRES. John CANNON
and Hester PLEDGE had the following known children:
John CANNON b. c1688 Henrico Co., VA. m. Mary PRICE
William CANNON b. c1690 " " " m. Judith WOODSON
Joseph CANNON b. c1692 " " "
Mary CANNON b. c1694 " " " m. William EAST?
B. Judith WOODSON, daughter of presumed Quaker parents (Robert WOODSON and
Elizabeth FARRIS) married William CANNON. "The Cannon family must not be
confounded with Kennon family, sometimes pronounced Cannon." [William and Mary
College Quarterly Historical Magazine; Volume 9, Number 4]
The parents of Judith WOODSON (Williams CANNON's wife), Robert WOODSON, b.
1634 and Elizabeth FARRIS, are presumed Quakers since their sons were
documented as being Quakers. [William and Mary College Quarterly Historical
Magazine; Volume 24, Number 4]
Since Judith's parents were Quakers, is there a possibility that William
CANNON was also a Quaker?
C. "John WOODSON (John3, Robert2, John1), son of John WOODSON and Judith
TARLETON, was a resident in Goochland County, VA. In 1741, John WOODSON,
Gent., aged forty-six, deposed in Goochland that in 1729 he went in company
with Capt. Richard COCKE, deceased, to the forks of the James River to survey
some land; that he surveyed 800 acres on the south side of the South Fork, and
Capt COCKE offered 400 acres thereof to his nephew, John COCKE, if he would
come and live on the land. But John COCKE declined, and thereupon, at the
request of Capt. COCKE, William CANNON paid the survey, and went and dwelt on
the land." [William and Mary College Quarterly Historical Magazine; Volume 10,
Number 1]
The land is presumed to be in Goochland County, VA and William CANNON is also
presumed to have been issued a land patent or grant about 1730.
D. Abraham CHILDRES and two of his step-sons, John and William CANNON (sons
of John CANNON and Hester/Esther PLEDGE), sold land in Virginia to John
SIMCOCK of Henrico Co (date unavailable). (Wm. lived in Goochland Co.)
(Source unknown)
E. "1771, Jan 28, was probated the will of Edward X (his mark) McGehee, of
Cumberland County, which devised to son John, 7 slaves and 700 acres of land

F. In the 1790 SC census, two CHILDRES families are living between Russel
KENNON and William KENNON, Greenville Co., Ninety-Six District. Russel and
William KENNON are believed to be the children of Simcock CANNON and Jane
RUDD.
