Hello everyone,
My grandfather, Clifford WAKEFIELD, was adopted in Washington State in 1915
by the WAKEFIELD family. I knew that his original name was Charles Henry
CANNON, b. 21 Apr. 1902, probably in Portland Oregon.
I found out that his parents were George M. CANNON and Nora Ann COLE.
George and Nora were both born in 1878, and were married on 25 Sept. 1900
in Cowlitz Co., WA. According to the marriage record, George was born in
Nevada, and his parents were Charles CANNON and Clara BENNETT.
In the 1900 census for Washington (and Oregon), George CANNON and Nora COLE
are nowhere to be found, but I did find one Samuel COLEMAN, 29 years old
and born in Nevada, listed in Ostrander, Cowlitz Co., WA. Living with
Samuel were two young half sisters Olive CANON, age 10; and May CANON, age
13, both born in Washington State. I checked the 1880 census for Nevada,
and found this CANON household living in Carson City, Ormsby County:
CANON, Maria, age 31, Keeping House, b. Michigan; both parents b. Ohio.
COLEMAN, Samuel, age 10, At School, b. Nevada; father b. NY; mother b. Ohio.
CRAWFORD, George, age 2, b. Nevada; father b. NY; mother b. Ohio.
CANON, Henry, age 34, Laborer, b. Iowa; both parents b. NY.
The census enumerator did not report anything in the "how persons are
related to head of household" column for any of the households. This CANON
family moved to Cowlitz Co., Washington Territory by 1887, where Samuel
COLEMAN's two half sisters were born.
I'm trying to find out if my great grandfather, George M. CANNON, born
1878, Nevada, and George CRAWFORD listed above, are one in the same.
When his daughter Addie May CANNON was born in 1904, George CANNON listed
his birthplace as California. I checked the 1880 soundex for California,
but found no 2 year old George CANNON/CANON.
George M. CANNON drowned on the Coweeman River, near Kelso, Cowlitz Co.,
WA, on 15 Apr. 1907. His obituary states that he had several brothers and
sisters, but failed to name any of them. He was buried in the I.O.O.F.
Cemetary (now Cowlitzview), but I don't know where his grave is, there's no
record of him there at all.
Does anybody know anything about any CANON/CANNON families of Nevada and
California? Also, I have not yet checked any state census for California or
Nevada. Does anyone have access to these, or know what years they were
taken?
Any suggestions or information greatly appreciated!
Thank you,
Brad Aumick
