Hello out there!
That last post was meant for the GROGAN list! SORRY! But
have lots more for you CANNONS!
Re BOOK "FINCANNONS, CANNONS, VONCANNONS, VUNCANNONS AND
RELATED FAMILIES" by Al G. FINCANNON
I regret I did not locate this book (by accident) until almost
time to leave the library, but I did manage to write down a few things
that appears to be part of my line. I will be returning soon and hope
to make copies of several pages at that time. The copiers were out of
order yesterday.
According to Mr. FINCANNON, his ancestors originated in Switzerland
and the VONCANNONs, VUNCANNONs are from Germany. Of course, CANNONS were
from Ireland and England. They all came to America by way of PA and then
a lot of them migrated down to NC. He covers a lot of Gaston Co, NC people.
My memory fails me as to the other two main areas covered. I do remember
Alabama being mentioned. I will post this information accurately after my
next trip. The following is a family of Gaston Co, NC which I am wondering
if may be some of my line.
Page 173 -
David Eli CANNON, b. 12/5/1837, d. 11/191898
m. Sarah Ann FARRAR on Jan. 1, 1861.
Children:
(1)Nathaniel Pinckney CANNON, b. 1861; d. 1923 (single)
(2)John William CANNON;(3)Ernest Richard CANNON;
(4)Margaret Dora CANNON; (5)Lula Bell CANNON
(6)Mary Frances Ellen CANNON; (7)David Arthur CANNON
David & Sarah with their family lived in Gaston Co., near Mt. Holly
NC on a 182 acre farm given to David by his father, William F. CANNON.
David had brothers named Fredrick J., William, John, Franklin and Francis.
There were two other N. Pickney CANNONs in two other CANNON families,
however, there was no mention in this book of Nathaniel line of Spartanburg,
SC/?,GA.
My great granddad was Nathan CANNON, Laurens Co., SC. I have been
unable to locate his parents. I have a copy of a newspaper clipping (no
identification which paper, but probably a Laurens or Ware Shoals paper)
stating Nathan, Pinckney, Mary and Jane came to this area (Boyds Mill Pond
area between Laurens and Ware Shoals, SC) with their parents. Parents are
not listed. Nathan had sons with names William, Franklin, John. John was
my granddad. His first child was named Sarah.
Can it be that the above family is in some way connected with mine?
Also, on the 1879 SC Census Index:
Nathan Cannon, age 58, b. SC, Spartanburg twnshp/Co.
(M593 Series; roll 1508; page 581.
Birth year would be 1812. My Nathan was born 1840.
From 1820 NC Census, Tax lists and other sources:
CANNON: (Pitts Co.) -
Abner, Bradford, Coarch, Dennis, HENRY, Hilry, Ira, Issac,
JOHN, John, John, Lewis, LIDDIA, NATHANIEL, Permmer, Pugh,
and Thomas.
There were many Cannon's listed in several other NC counties, but
this was the largest.
Enough for now!! Hope this helps someone!
Have a wonderful weekend!
