Bev,
I have found that the name "Fate" is commonly used instead of
Lafayette, so M. F. Cannon instead of M.L. Cannon would make sense.
"Fate" seems to be quite a popular name in the mid 1800's, I know of at
least 3 of my folks scattered in amongst my branches who were named
(Lafayette) Fate. I would suspect that he would be found by that name on the
1860 census here in Georgia or along the way to AR.

but
his wife in her memiors calls him M.F. Cannon, thought this might be a
clue.
