*Markham - Henrico co, Va to Prince Edward co, Va Part 2
a report from the database of Pamela Hutchison Garrett
Generation No. 3
3. ARTHUR4 MARKHAM (THOMAS3, THOMAS2, ENGLAND1) was born 1670-1690 in
Virginia, and died March 31, 1732 in Henrico co, Va. He married
FRANCES.
Notes for ARTHUR MARKHAM:
The relationship between Arthur Markham of Henrico co, Va and his likely
father Thomas Markham of New Kent co, Va has been assumed and is not
proven.
Evidence of Arthur Markham first begins to appear in Henrico co, Va
about
1715. It is assumed that he is the son of the Thomas Markham who is on
the
Tax Records of New Kent co, Va in 1704. Arthur Markham is established
with
land in Henrico co, Va by 1716 and the birth of a daughter is recorded
in
1717 so we might assume that his marriage occurred by 1715, if not
before.
There is no clear evidence of when Arthur Markham was born, but we
should
assume that it was before 1695. There is some evidence that Arthur
Markham's
son Thomas was born around or before 1712, so this may push Arthur
Markham's
birth and marriage even earlier. Unfortunately we do not know too much
about
Arthur Markham. His wife's name appears to be Frances. He seems to
have had
several children recorded in the records of North Farnham Parish,
Henrico co,
Va. It is clear that Elinor and Frances Markham are his daughters and
it
seems possible that John N Markham and Elizabeth Markham might also be
his
children that died young. I have assumed that the Arthur M Markham, who
died
in Mar 1731/32 is this Arthur Markham, but that may not be correct. If
it is
the correct Arthur Markham in the death record, we might assume that he
was
about age 40-60 when he died. Researchers have long believed that
Arthur
Markham had at least two sons, Arthur and Thomas Markham. It seems very
likely that there were other children, not yet linked to Arthur Markham.
There are several Marcum men born between about 1750-1765 in
Virginia,
who are likely candidates as grandsons of this Arthur Markham or perhaps
a
'not yet identified' brother of this Arthur Markham. These 'stray'
Markham/Marcum men have not been tied to Arthur Markham's sons, Arthur
and
Thomas Markham who removed to Amelia co, Va. Research is continuing to
try
to identify the relationships between these people.

(note from Pam Garrett--it is more likely that Arthur Markham was born
before
1695, as explained above)

note: consider the names Elinor and Frances. They appear in the
Markham
family in Prince George co, Va. Samuel Markham and Mary Baty had a
daughter
Frances Markham bc.1715. Also a Thomas and Elinor Harrison are
mentioned in
relation to the Markham family there. Something to think about.

children
of Josiah Marcum b.1759 in Chesterfield co, Va. Josiah Marcum's

have been identified as Jacob, Stephen, William, Moses, Josiah, James,
Randall, John, Joshua, Rebecca, Clara and Joseph. I wonder if there may
have
been an early marriage between the Markham and Woodson families?)
