"THE KEOWEE COURIER" Oconee/Pickens Counties, South Carolina
Issue of Saturday November 28, 1857:
OBITUARY
Died, at Thomas D. Morgan's in Pickens district, on the 9th of
November, 1857, after a long and painful illness, of Paralysis, Mrs.
MARY CANNON, wife of the late James Cannon, in the 84th year of her age.
The deceased had been a member of the Baptist church for upwards of
thirty years, and showed by her walk that she understood the teachings
of the Spirit. Her affliction, though of a painful character, was borne
with fortitude and resignation becoming the truly pious, and it might be
truly said with emphasis that she was a mother in Israel. She leaves
many relations and friends to mourn her loss, but believing at the same
time that their loss is her eternal gain. In all her relations in life,
as wife, mother, mistress, neighbor and friend, she had no superior, and
it might be truly said of her that she had not an enemy upon earth, but
she is gone to enjoy that rest prepared for the people of God; and let
us who survive endeavor to profit by her example and be ever ready to
take our departure in peace.
