Dear Cannon List:
I have a real brick wall with my Feruby CANNON. All I know is that she was
the second wife of James McELWEE. They married in 1811 probably in York
District, SC. James was also originally from York District, SC, and went back
there to seek a mother for his family of eight, the last who was born in
1806. James's first wife was Nancy Johnson who died in 1808. James and
Feruby had the following children:
Julia Rather McELWEE b. 8 January 1813 (my g.g.grandmother)
Hulda McELWEE b. 15 May 1814
Thomas Brown McELWEE b. 24 February 1816
James died in 11 June 1818 in Roane CO,TN. and is buried in the Rockwood, TN
Cemetery.
Feruby is spelt Feriba in some notes.
James enlisted in Col. William Campbell's Regiment in Washington CO, VA. He
served as a Private in General John Sevier's command. James went with the
"Over Mountain Men" from Sycamore Shoals, Tennessee (at present day
Elizabethton) to fight at the battle of Kings Mountain. 10/7/1780. He was
also in the Battle of Musgrave Mill. He is listed there in the National Park
records at Kings Mountain, as having fought in the battle and it is noted
that he was a conjugal first cousin of Daniel Boone. Source: The above
records viewed and recorded by D.D.Neves.
