My great grandmother married three times: First to John BUTLER who died three years after
the marriage, second to William CANNON in 1890 (I have their marriage certificate) and
finally to William HUDDART in 1902.
In 1891 census Mary Ann (Drake) CANNON and her son George BUTLER from her first marriage
are living with her father, John DRAKE and his family (Sarah and Herbert) in Normanton in
Yorkshire. Also living there were William CANNON and his three children: Elizabeth,
Harriet and Walter.
Mary Ann had two children with William CANNON, my grandfather Joseph CANNON (I have his
birth certificate) and his sister, Agnes Hannah.
In 1901 census Mary Ann CANNON is back to being Mary Ann BUTLER. My grandfather Joseph
CANNON is listed as Joseph BUTLER as was his sister. They were living in Sharlston in
Yorkshire and Mary Ann was working as a housekeeper.
No sign of William CANNON (born in Middlesex/London in 1854) or his three children.
I only learned of this recently when I started research on my family. My aunt finally
broke down and told me that my grandfather was extremely embarrassed and distressed when
this came to light.....so I'm assuming William CANNON together with his three children
did a runner! But I cannot find any trace of him in the 1901 census or any ship leaving
the country.
I'd like to ask my great grandfather, William CANNON "Where the heck did you go?
And why?"
